Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:11 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Freeport

Freeport, Texas fishing revolves around a diverse mix of bay, surf, jetty and offshore opportunities centered on the Brazos River, Freeport Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico. Anglers can quickly reach Christmas Bay, Chocolate Bay and the shallow marshes west of town, or run the jetties and nearshore rigs out of Surfside and the Freeport ship channel. This mix of structure and current creates year-round action for inshore and bluewater anglers.

Inshore, focus on spotted seatrout, redfish and flounder. Spring brings warming water and baitfish into Christmas and Bastrop bays. Wade or drift shell and mud flats with soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, topwaters at first light and live shrimp under popping corks. Work windward shorelines with active bait and subtle current; in off-colored water, switch to darker plastics and rattling corks so fish can find the bait.

Summer pushes trout and reds toward deeper shorelines, bayous and the surf. The Surfside and Quintana beachfronts can fire at dawn on light south winds. Wade the first and second guts throwing topwaters, spoons and swimbaits; keep casts fan-shaped and cover water until you intersect moving schools. When surf is too rough, slide back into the ICW and channel edges with live croaker or shrimp Carolina-rigged or free-lined near dropoffs.

The Freeport jetties are a high-percentage play almost all year. Target the Gulf side on cleaner water and incoming tides for trout, Spanish mackerel and sheepshead; work the channel side on stronger current for bull reds, black drum and sharks. Use medium to heavy tackle, sliding egg sinkers and 30–40 lb leader to handle rocks and abrasion. Free-line live shrimp for trout near the surface and fish cracked crab or cut bait on the bottom for reds and drum. Always reposition until you find a seam of current that funnels bait along the rocks.

Flounder fishing around Freeport peaks in fall when fish stage along drains and channel edges. Cast Gulp! shrimp, curl-tail grubs or mud minnows on light jigheads, crawling them painfully slow along the bottom. Hit small bayou mouths on a falling tide, especially where marsh drains intersect the ICW or Brazos River. Set the hook with steady pressure rather than a hard swing to avoid pulling baits from their mouths.

Offshore, Freeport is a prime jump-off point for red snapper, kingfish, cobia and tuna. Nearshore platforms in 40–90 feet hold snapper, spadefish and smaller kings; fish vertical with cut bait or live pinfish on two-hook bottom rigs. Slow-troll ribbonfish or diving plugs along weedlines and rig rows for king mackerel, especially around temperature breaks. Farther out, bluewater trips target yellowfin and blackfin tuna, wahoo and mahi around deep rigs and shrimp boats; chum hard, downsize leaders when the bite is tough and keep at least one high-speed lure in the spread for wahoo.

Wind is a constant factor along this stretch of the Texas Coast, so plan around it. Southerly winds typically favor early wades on protected shorelines and marsh drains, while light north winds after a front can make for ideal surf and jetty conditions. Build each Freeport trip by matching wind direction and tide to the habitat: protected backlakes on windy days, open surf and jetty edges when seas lay down, and nearshore rigs when the Gulf is calm enough for a safe run.
