Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Woodstock
Woodstock, NY fishing is anchored by the Esopus Creek and a web of Catskill tributaries, giving anglers a mix of classic trout water and productive warmwater options within a short drive of town. Clear, cold freestone streams tumble out of the mountains, while nearby ponds and reservoirs provide still-water fishing for bass, panfish, and more. The key to success around Woodstock is matching your tactics to the strong seasonal changes and reading each piece of water for current, depth, and cover.
Spring is prime time on the Esopus Creek and its tributaries for brown, rainbow, and brook trout. As snowmelt and spring rains swell flows, target soft edges: inside bends, current breaks behind boulders, and slower seams along the bank. Nymphing is the most reliable approach — think beadhead pheasant tails, hare’s ears, and stonefly patterns fished under an indicator or on a tight-line leader. Spin anglers do well with small inline spinners, 1/16–1/8 oz spoons, and minnow-imitating plugs cast quartering upstream and retrieved just faster than the current. Use light fluorocarbon leaders to keep presentations natural in the clear water.
By late spring into early summer, insect activity intensifies and dry-fly fishing can be excellent, especially on evenings with strong mayfly or caddis hatches. Focus on riffle-to-pool transitions and tailouts where rising trout pod up. Sizes 14–18 parachute-style dries and elk-hair caddis patterns cover most situations. In low, clear summer flows, stealth matters: approach from downstream, use long leaders, and scale down to lighter tippet and smaller flies or 1–2 inch soft plastics on ultralight spinning gear. Trout slide into deeper runs, undercut banks, and shaded pocket water during mid-day; the first and last light of the day are typically most productive.
Woodstock’s nearby ponds and slower stretches of water hold smallmouth and largemouth bass, pickerel, and panfish. In late spring, look for bass in the shallows around emerging weedbeds, laydowns, and rocky points. Wacky-rigged stickbaits, small jigs, and 1/4 oz spinnerbaits are reliable search lures. As the water warms through summer, work topwater baits — poppers, walking baits, and hollow-body frogs — early and late in the day. Midday, slow down with Texas-rigged plastics or Ned rigs crawled along bottom structure. Panfish like bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie stack around docks, timber, and weed edges; tiny jigs tipped with soft plastics or worms under a float are simple and effective.
Fall brings some of the most comfortable fishing conditions around Woodstock. Cooling water re-energizes trout in Esopus Creek, which feed heavily ahead of winter. This is an ideal time to swing larger streamers for bigger browns in deeper pools and along cut banks. Bass in nearby lakes and ponds shift to points and steeper breaks, where medium-diving crankbaits and compact jigs shine. Pay attention to baitfish activity at the surface: schooling perch and panfish often give away where predators are working.
Even during winter, open-water opportunities persist in stretches that remain ice-free. Trout concentrate in the deepest, slowest pools; downsize your flies or lures, fish close to the bottom, and move slowly between spots. Throughout the year, success around Woodstock comes from reading water carefully, rotating between moving and still-water options as conditions change, and fine-tuning presentation speed and size to the season and species you’re targeting.

Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
