Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Lawrence
Lawrence, Kansas anglers focus heavily on Clinton Lake, the Kansas River, and local community lakes like Lone Star Lake and Lake View. These systems provide a mix of clear reservoir fishing and classic Midwestern river fishing. Largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and catfish headline the action, with white bass and hybrids offering fast-paced schooling bites at key times of year.
Seasonal patterns drive success around Lawrence. In early spring, target warming coves and creek arms on Clinton and Lone Star for prespawn largemouth and crappie. Work channel swings and rocky banks with slowly retrieved suspending jerkbaits, finesse jigs, and small swimbaits. Crappie stage on brush piles, standing timber, and riprap in 8–15 feet; vertical jig small tube jigs or minnows directly over cover. As water moves into the 60s, white bass and wipers push shad shallow—watch for surface activity across main-lake points and windblown banks.
Summer fishing shifts to deeper structure. On Clinton Lake, walleye and white bass hold along main-lake points, humps, and submerged roadbeds. Troll crankbaits or crawler harnesses just off bottom, focusing on depth contours where baitfish show up on electronics. Largemouth bass slide to offshore brush, channel edges, and the edges of standing timber; Texas-rigged plastics, Carolina rigs, and football jigs score well. Night fishing can be excellent on both Clinton and the Kansas River for channel and flathead catfish—use cut shad, live sunfish, or prepared baits around holes, logjams, and current seams.
Fall brings some of the most consistent fishing in the Lawrence area. Cooling water pushes shad into the backs of coves and into riverside eddies. Bass and white bass corral bait against rocky banks and points—cast lipless crankbaits, squarebills, and small topwaters, covering water quickly. Crappie re-form into dense schools on mid-depth brush and bridge pilings; electronics make it easier to stay on fish, but a simple slip float and jig setup catches plenty when worked at the right depth. On the Kansas River, focus on deeper bends and current breaks for blue, channel, and flathead catfish, using heavier gear to handle current and big fish.
Winter anglers around Lawrence find steady action by slowing presentations and concentrating on vertical approaches. On ice-free days at Clinton and Lone Star, target steep rock banks and channel edges with blade baits and jigging spoons for walleye, drum, and bass. Crappie stack up in the deepest brush piles and along drop-offs; a small jig tipped with a plastic body, held nearly still, is often best. River levels and clarity can vary on the Kansas River, but when conditions allow, deep holes and inside bends hold catfish that respond to fresh cut bait fished tight to bottom.
Across the Lawrence area, habitat variety is the key advantage: clear reservoir shorelines, riprap, flooded timber, old roadbeds, and flowing river all exist within a short drive. Shore anglers do well on public access points, piers, and parks, while boaters can unlock offshore humps and mid-channel structure. Adjust lure size and color to water clarity—more natural hues in clear Clinton water, and bolder colors or scented baits in the more stained Kansas River—and you can consistently connect with the diverse gamefish that make Lawrence, Kansas a reliable freshwater fishing destination.
