Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:44 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Wichita

Wichita fishing is built around a mix of river and reservoir opportunities that fish well in all four seasons. The Arkansas River cuts right through town, while local community lakes like Watson Park, Chisholm Creek Park, and the larger El Dorado and Cheney reservoirs within an easy drive give anglers a wide range of water types and species to target.

Seasonal patterns drive success around Wichita. In late winter and early spring, focus on prespawn crappie and walleye on main-lake points and channel swings. Slow-roll small jigs or minnows around brush and rock in 8–15 feet of water. As water temps approach the 50s, walleye make predictable runs along riprap dams and rocky shorelines at dawn and after dark—casting suspending jerkbaits and jig-and-minnow combos produces consistently.

By late spring and early summer, largemouth bass and white bass become more active across Wichita-area lakes. Look for bass in shallow coves, flooded brush, and along weed edges. Productive baits include Texas-rigged soft plastics, spinnerbaits on windy banks, and squarebill crankbaits deflected off wood. For white bass and wipers, watch for surface busts over main-lake flats and humps; small chrome lipless cranks, spoons, and 2–3 inch swimbaits are reliable when fish are schooling.

Summer pushes much of the bite deeper through midday, especially on clearer reservoirs like Cheney and El Dorado. Early and late windows are prime for topwater bass fishing around shoreline cover and marina areas. During the heat of the day, target submerged structure and drop-offs in 12–25 feet with Carolina rigs, deep-diving crankbaits, and vertical presentations like drop-shots. Night fishing shines in midsummer for both catfish and walleye on the Arkansas River and larger lakes—cut bait, live bluegill, and prepared baits fished on slip rigs below channel bends, bridge pylons, and wing dikes will connect with channel, blue, and flathead catfish.

Fall is one of the most productive seasons in Wichita. Cooling water pushes shad shallow and stacks gamefish on windblown points and into creek arms. Fast-moving search baits excel: medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and swimbaits consistently produce mixed bags of bass, white bass, and wipers. Crappie regroup on brush piles, dock edges, and standing timber; vertical jigging with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs in natural shad or chartreuse patterns is a reliable tactic.

Winter fishing around Wichita centers on deeper holes in the Arkansas River and channel edges on reservoirs. Slow, methodical presentations are key: tight-lipped bass and walleye respond best to jigging spoons, blade baits, and hair jigs worked just off the bottom. For catfish, downsize hooks slightly and fish fresh cut bait in the slowest current adjacent to deep runs and outside bends.

Tactical tips for the Wichita region include fishing wind-blown structure rather than hiding from the breeze, matching lure size to local shad (often 2–3 inches), and using electronics or bank-visual cues to locate transitions—rock-to-mud, riprap, and channel swings are consistent fish magnets. Urban ponds and park lakes fish best around dawn and dusk; small jigs, inline spinners, and slip-float rigs with worms or minnows will catch panfish, stocker-sized catfish, and the occasional quality bass throughout the year.

The Best Fishing Spots around Wichita

Cheney Reservoir

A regional favorite west of Wichita, Cheney Reservoir offers expansive open-water fishing for walleye, wiper (hybrid striped bass), white bass, crappie, and channel catfish; spring winds push bait and game fish to windward points and riprap, while summer trolling or drifting shines on main-lake flats, and fall schools of white bass/wipers work shad along the dam and causeways near Cheney State Park.

El Dorado Lake

Northeast of Wichita, El Dorado Lake is known for strong populations of walleye, wiper, white bass, crappie, and catfish; anglers target windblown shorelines and rocky points in spring, flooded timber and brush for crappie through early summer, and roam open basins for schooling wipers/whites as shad bunch up near El Dorado State Park.

Lake Afton

A convenient multi-use lake southwest of Wichita, Lake Afton offers accessible fishing for channel catfish, saugeye, crappie, largemouth bass, and bluegill; fish the fishing docks and riprap for crappie in spring, work weed edges and points for bass through summer, and target catfish along windward banks or near the dam in low light.

Little Arkansas River

Meandering through north Wichita and nearby communities, the Little Arkansas River produces channel/flathead catfish, white bass, saugeye, and occasional walleye; anglers favor eddies below riffles, bridge shadows, and confluence holes, with cut bait for catfish and small jigs or spinners for roaming white bass during cool-season pushes.

Wellington City Lake

South of Wichita, Wellington City Lake fishes well for wiper, channel catfish, saugeye, crappie, and largemouth bass; spring wind stacks bait on rocky points for wiper/saugeye, while summer evenings bring catfish shallow, and crappie relate to brush and docks with consistent action into fall.
