Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:4 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~13 days on 14th July
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    400,943 km
    Proximity:
    11.2 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Chalmette

Chalmette, Louisiana sits just downriver of New Orleans on the east bank of the Mississippi, giving anglers quick access to brackish marshes, backwater canals, industrial river structure, and the sprawling delta. The mix of river current and Gulf influence creates a high-nutrient system where speckled trout, redfish, sheepshead, drum, and catfish all thrive within a short run of local launches.

Seasonally, spring in Chalmette is prime for speckled trout and mixed-bag action in the marsh. As river levels rise, trout push into cleaner pockets off the main flow: dead-end canals, pipeline canals with good tidal movement, and ponds off the Intracoastal Waterway. Work 1/4 oz jigheads with soft plastics in shrimp or baitfish colors, focusing on current seams and points. Redfish feed shallow on warming mud flats; gold spoons, spinnerbaits, and popping corks with shrimp-imitating plastics draw strikes along cane lines and broken marsh edges.

Summer sees more stable salinity in the marshes southeast of Chalmette and along canals leading toward Hopedale and Delacroix. Speckled trout often stack on shell pads, pipeline crossings, and wellheads where current washes bait across structure. Early and late, throw topwaters over 3–6 ft flats; once the sun climbs, switch to tight-lined plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork. Redfish cruise the outer edges of grass and roseau cane; sight-fishing is viable on calm days—cast weedless spoons or paddle tails ahead of cruising fish in 1–2 ft of water.

Fall is arguably the peak for Chalmette fishing. Cooling temps push shrimp and baitfish out of the marsh, and predators concentrate in easy-to-read ambush spots. Look for strong tidal drains, the mouths of bayous that dump into larger lakes, and intersections of man-made canals. Speckled trout school heavily; drift and fan-cast plastics or live bait under corks until you locate fish, then power-pole down or anchor quietly. Redfish stage at the mouths of drains and outside bends with good depth; think slow presentations close to bottom—3/8 oz jigheads with Gulp or natural bait work well.

Winter fishing around Chalmette shifts to deeper, more stable water. Seek out deep bayous, turning basins, and ship channels where speckled trout and redfish drop into 10–25 ft holes. Vertically jig heavier plastics or drop-shot live shrimp right on bottom. Black drum and sheepshead become reliable targets along pilings, bulkheads, and riprap near ports and refineries. Use light to medium tackle with small, strong hooks and natural baits like dead shrimp or fiddler crabs, nudging presentations tight to structure.

Habitat-wise, Chalmette offers a unique blend: industrial Mississippi River banks, rock-lined batture, marsh ponds, canals, and nearby interior lakes. On the river side, catfish (blues, channels, and flatheads) and freshwater drum feed along drop-offs and behind wing dams and barge tie-offs—target current breaks with slip rigs, heavy sinkers, and cut bait. In the brackish zones, focus on points, cuts, and windward shorelines that stack bait. Water clarity is rarely perfect here; opt for lures with vibration and contrast, and don’t be afraid of loud popping corks to call fish in.

Tactically, success around Chalmette hinges on reading tide, wind, and river level together. On rising tides, fish push shallow onto flats and marsh edges; on falling tides, they funnel to drains, cuts, and deeper channels. Favor moving water over slack. Use polarized glasses to pick out subtle drains, shell, and potholes along marsh banks. When the river runs high and dirty, slide farther from the main channel into cleaner side-water, or target species that tolerate mud like catfish and drum. Downsizing leaders and lures in clearer winter and fall conditions can dramatically increase bites, while heavier leaders and more visible baits help in the milky spring outflow.

Wharf's or Jetties are good places to wet a line and meet other fishermen. They often produce a fresh feed of fish and are also great to catch bait fish. As they are often well lit, they also provide a good opportunity for night fishing. There are 26 wharf(s) in this area.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 9 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 1 main harbours in this area.
