Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Lafayette
Fishing in Lafayette, Louisiana revolves around shallow bayous, coulees, neighborhood lakes, and quick runs to the Atchafalaya Basin and coastal marshes. Anglers here target largemouth bass, sac-a-lait (crappie), bream, catfish, and seasonal redfish and speckled trout in nearby brackish systems. The key is understanding how water levels, temperature, and clarity drive fish movements in this flat, swampy landscape.
Seasonal patterns around Lafayette follow classic South Louisiana timing. Late winter through early spring is prime for sac-a-lait and bream in canals, oxbows, and cypress sloughs; look for fish staging on the first drop or around wood before moving tight to shoreline cover to spawn. Bass fishing heats up from February through May as water temps climb into the 60s; concentrate on shallow wood, laydowns, and grass edges. Summer pushes fish to shade and deeper bayou bends where current undercuts the bank, making early morning topwater and late evening soft plastics especially productive. Fall brings another feeding push—shad and small baitfish move into creeks and dead-end canals, and both bass and panfish stack up around points, drains, and intersections.
Key habitats near Lafayette include slow-moving bayous, flooded timber, cypress swamps, borrow pits, and man-made ponds. In the Atchafalaya Basin backwaters, bass and sac-a-lait hold around cypress knees, stumps, and submerged brush. In clearer subdivision lakes and park ponds, focus on riprap, culverts, and any pipe inflow or fountain that creates slight current and oxygen. Bayou bends with visible eddies and slightly deeper holes are consistent catfish producers, especially when the water has some color.
Techniques and lures are tailored to stained, shallow water. For Lafayette bass, compact spinnerbaits in white or chartreuse, squarebill crankbaits, and Texas-rigged creature baits in junebug, black/blue, or green pumpkin catch fish year-round. Flip and pitch to visible wood, pier posts, and grass clumps, keeping presentations tight to cover. In very shallow marsh-style areas, weightless stick worms and frogs excel. For sac-a-lait, use small tube jigs or hair jigs under a slip cork; adjust depth until you tick the tops of brush or just above submerged limbs. Slow vertical presentations around cypress trees and barge pilings can be deadly.
Catfish tactics are straightforward but productive. Channel and blue catfish hold in deeper holes of Bayou Vermilion, Bayou Teche, and similar waterways. Anchor just upstream of a bend or ledge and soak cut shad, chicken liver, or prepared baits on slip-sinker rigs. Night fishing in summer often produces the best action. For bream, small worms or crickets under a fixed cork around grass edges, docks, and cypress knees provide constant bites and are perfect for kids.
Practical tips for Lafayette anglers include watching water levels and color—rapid rises from heavy rain push fish tight to new shoreline cover, while falling water pulls them to drains and deeper ditches that funnel bait. In the Basin, favor slightly clearer water pockets and any subtle current. Stealth matters in shallow ponds: keep casts long, stay off the bank edge, and work parallel to shoreline cover instead of straight at it. Local knowledge—bait shop reports, ramp conversations, and recent patterns—goes a long way in this dynamic, water-rich part of Louisiana.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
