Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Monroe
Fishing around Monroe, Washington centers on the Skykomish and Snohomish rivers, with Lake Tye and several nearby lakes rounding out the options. This mix of flowing and still water creates consistent action for salmon, steelhead, trout, bass, and panfish within a short drive of town.
Seasonal patterns are driven largely by salmon and steelhead runs. Summer through early fall, the Skykomish and Snohomish see Chinook and coho salmon pushes, with pink salmon available in odd-numbered years. Target first and last light when flows are moderate and water has 2–4 feet of visibility. Winter focuses on steelhead and whitefish; fish slower seams, tailouts, and deep walking-speed runs with smaller presentations. Spring brings improving trout fishing in both rivers and lakes as water warms and insect activity increases. Largemouth bass in Lake Tye and nearby small lakes turn on once water temperatures climb into the mid‑50s, with peak action from late spring into early fall.
Key habitat types in the rivers include boulder-studded runs, soft inside bends, gravel bars, and deep pools below riffles. Salmon often hold in travel lanes along seams and at the heads and tails of pools, while steelhead favor walking-speed slots and boulder pockets with overhead chop. Cutthroat and rainbow trout concentrate along cutbanks, woody debris, and side channels. In Lake Tye, focus on weedlines, drop-offs, inflow and outflow corners, and any isolated cover such as docks or submerged timber. Panfish stack on shallow flats with weeds, especially near the north and south ends of the lake.
Productive techniques vary by target. For salmon, cast spoons, spinners, or twitching jigs across current and swing them through likely holding water; adjust weight so your lure ticks bottom occasionally without hanging up constantly. Plugs and wobblers backtrolled from a drift boat or sled can be deadly in deeper holding lanes. For steelhead, drift fishing with small corkies and yarn, beads, or bait, as well as side-drifting soft plastics, covers water efficiently. On clearer days, downsize to subtle soft beads, yarn balls, or small jigs under a float.
Trout and whitefish respond well to smaller offerings. In rivers, swing soft hackles and small streamers on a light fly rod or cast in-line spinners and small spoons on ultralight spinning gear. In lakes, power-style baits off the bottom, small wobbling spoons, and suspending natural or scented baits under a slip float are reliable for stocked rainbow trout, especially at Lake Tye soon after plantings.
Bass and panfish tactics around Monroe focus heavily on Lake Tye. Work shallow shorelines and vegetation with weightless soft-plastic stickbaits, small jigs, and compact spinnerbaits for largemouth. Early and late in the day, topwater poppers and frogs around weed edges are highly effective. For perch, crappie, and bluegill, downsize to 1/32–1/16 oz jigs tipped with soft plastics or bait and suspend them under a float, slowly drifting them across flats until you locate a school.
Across all fisheries, success in the Monroe area comes from matching your approach to flow levels and water clarity, covering water efficiently, and focusing on structure—seams in the rivers, and weedlines and depth breaks in the lakes.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 19 beaches and bays in this area.
