Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:20 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Fishing Overview Ruston

Fishing around Ruston, Louisiana revolves around a network of productive freshwater systems within an hour’s drive, including Lake D’Arbonne, Caney Lake (Caney Creek Reservoir), and the Ouachita River. These waters combine flooded timber, creek channels, cypress edges, grass lines, and deep main-lake structure, giving anglers multiple patterns to work every month of the year.

Seasonal patterns are well-defined. In late winter and early spring, crappie and bass slide toward shallow coves, creek arms, and protected pockets. On D’Arbonne and Caney, crappie stack along channel edges and bridge pilings before pushing up to shallow wood and brush; a slow-twitched jig or small minnow under a slip float is deadly. Bass stage on secondary points and channel swings, then lock on to shoreline wood and grass as water warms. Spinnerbaits, vibrating jigs, and compact flipping jigs work along laydowns and cypress knees.

By summer, heat pushes fish deeper. On Caney, focus on offshore humps, ledges, and long points in 15–25 feet where big largemouth school on shad. Deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and football jigs dragged along the bottom shine here. On D’Arbonne and the Ouachita River, look to the main channel: crappie suspend over brush piles and bridge spans, while catfish prowl bends and holes. Night fishing becomes especially productive, with cut shad or chicken liver anchored on the bottom for channel and blue cats.

Fall around Ruston brings shad migrations into creeks and pockets, firing up bass and schooling white bass or hybrids. Watch for surface activity on main-lake flats and at the mouths of creeks; cast chrome lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits, or topwater walkers through busting schools. Crappie regroup on mid-depth brush in 10–15 feet, and a slowly vertical-jigged tube or hair jig will pick off slabs. Winter can be excellent for both trophy bass and crappie by targeting deep, stable water near the main channel with subtle presentations.

Key habitat types and how to fish them:

  • Flooded timber & brush piles: Use a vertical approach. For crappie, drop a 1/16–1/8 oz jig straight down and hold it still above the cover. For bass, pitch Texas-rigged plastics into holes in the timber, letting them fall on a semi-slack line.
  • Cypress edges & shallow wood: Work a spinnerbait or square-bill crankbait tight to trunks and laydowns. Repeated casts from different angles often trigger bigger fish holding deep in the cover.
  • Grass lines & shallow flats: In spring and early summer, swim jigs, weightless soft plastics, and frogs catch active bass cruising the edges. Sunfish and smaller panfish gather here as well; a small worm or cricket under a float will get quick bites.
  • Main channels & river bends: On the Ouachita and channelized portions of lakes, target outside bends, current breaks, and the head and tail of holes. Heavier egg sinkers with cut bait or live bream tempt channel, blue, and flathead catfish.

Practical tactics include using electronics to locate schools on deeper structures, downsizing line to 4–8 lb test for finicky crappie, and keeping multiple rod setups rigged for quick changes when fish move between shallow and deep water. Early and late in the day are prime feeding windows, especially during hot months, so plan trips to hit low-light periods around sunrise and sunset for the most consistent action.
