Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:14 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Shreveport

Shreveport fishing is anchored by the Red River and a network of classic north Louisiana lakes like Cross and Caddo. The area is best known for quality largemouth bass, slab crappie, and heavyweight blue catfish, but seasonal action for white bass and stripers adds variety. Understanding how water levels, river flow, and vegetation cycles change through the year is the key to consistent success.

Spring is prime time around Shreveport. On Cross Lake and Caddo Lake, bass slide shallow as water temperatures push into the 60s. Work soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs around cypress trees, knees, and shallow grass edges, pitching tight to cover. On warming afternoons, topwaters worked over submerged grass and along seawalls draw explosive strikes. Crappie stack on brush piles, standing timber, and the edges of old creek channels; target them with small jigs or minnows fished just above marked fish on electronics.

Summer shifts the bite deeper, especially on the Red River pools and Cross Lake. Bass often hold on main-lake points, channel swings, riprap, and deeper brush piles. Carolina rigs, deep crankbaits, and football jigs pulled along bottom transitions and shell beds score well in low-light windows. Midday, shading cover is crucial: docks, bridges, barge tie-offs, and overhanging trees all concentrate fish. Catfish action ramps up as heat builds—cut shad, skipjack, or chicken soaked along the Red River ledges, barge fields, and downstream of lock and dam structures finds blue and channel catfish consistently.

Fall in Shreveport brings aggressive feeding. Shad push into creeks, back channels, and marina basins, pulling bass and white bass with them. Watch for schooling activity and birds; throw lipless crankbaits, squarebills, and small swimbaits around visible bait. On Cross Lake, wind-blown banks and shallow flats with scattered grass become high-percentage zones. Crappie regroup on mid-depth structure, and vertical jigging over brush in 12–18 feet is a reliable pattern. Catfish remain active along river bends and outside channel edges where current sweeps bait.

Winter fishing can be excellent for patient anglers. Bass on Cross Lake and the Red River relate to the deepest available structure near channels and drop-offs; slowly-presented jigs, blade baits, and suspending jerkbaits excel. On cold, stable days, focus on vertical presentations to fish you see on sonar. This is also trophy blue cat season—target deep holes, scour depressions below wing dikes, and channel bends with fresh cut bait and stout gear.

Across Shreveport’s waters, electronics and precise boat positioning dramatically improve catch rates. Mark productive brush, channel edges, and rock piles and cycle through them instead of roaming. In stained water, favor chartreuse and darker lure colors; in clearer backwaters, more natural shad and green pumpkin patterns shine. Wind direction, current flow, and water level changes on the Red River and connected lakes can reposition fish overnight, so adjust by checking main-lake points and creek mouths first before pushing farther back. With this tactical approach, Shreveport delivers consistent action and frequent shots at big bass and heavyweight catfish year-round.

The Best Fishing Spots around Shreveport

Cross Lake

Shreveport’s signature fishery, Cross Lake produces largemouth bass, slab crappie, chunky blue and channel catfish, and seasonal white bass, with grass lines, cypress edges, and docks offering classic targets; spring and fall shine for bass and crappie, while summer nights are prime for catfish, and easy access from city parks and multiple launches on the west side of Shreveport make it a go-to for both bank and boat anglers.

Red River

Flowing right through Shreveport–Bossier City, the Red River’s pools, wing dikes, and current seams hold blue and flathead catfish, striped/white bass runs, and solid largemouth action around backwaters and oxbows; look for baitfish on current breaks and fish eddies near revetments, with popular access near downtown landings and marinas on both banks.

Caddo Lake

A famed cypress swamp straddling the state line northwest of Shreveport, Caddo Lake offers trophy-class largemouth bass, prolific crappie, and chain pickerel around lily pads, timber, and bayous, with best bites in spring spawn and fall shad migrations; launches near Oil City and Mooringsport make exploring the boat lanes straightforward while piers and bank spots serve shore anglers.

Toledo Bend Reservoir

One of America’s premier bass lakes on the Sabine River southwest of Shreveport, Toledo Bend is legendary for trophy largemouth, plus strong crappie, catfish, and seasonal white bass; target creek channel swings, hydrilla edges, and main-lake points, with year-round tournaments and abundant marinas, ramps, and bank access along both Louisiana and Texas shores.

Lake Bistineau

South of Bossier City, Lake Bistineau’s flooded cypress flats and open lanes produce excellent crappie, quality largemouth bass, and dependable catfish; spring and early summer around timber and grass are particularly productive, with popular launches and bank fishing at state park areas and community ramps on the western and northern shores.

Cypress Bayou Reservoir

Often called Cypress Lake near Benton, this clear, structure-rich reservoir offers strong crappie and largemouth bass action around boat docks, brush, and cypress knees, with summer catfish along channel edges; multiple parks, piers, and ramps provide easy shore and boat access just north of the Shreveport–Bossier metro.

Black Bayou Lake (Bossier Parish)

A quiet alternative near Princeton and Benton, Black Bayou Lake fishes well for crappie, shallow-water largemouth, and summertime catfish, with cypress trees, lily pads, and creek channels offering ambush cover; modest shoreline spots and small-craft ramps make it accessible while still favoring stealthy boat approaches.

Wallace Lake

Just southeast of Shreveport, Wallace Lake’s shallow flats, timber, and hydrilla attract spring crappie and bass to the shallows, with summer and early fall producing catfish and schoolie white bass near deeper drains; public launches and bank-friendly areas around the dam and park make it convenient for quick trips.

Bayou Bodcau Reservoir

Upstream of Haughton, the Bayou Bodcau Reservoir (Bodcau Lake) offers a more natural feel with good numbers of bream, eater-size catfish, and resident largemouth bass; target woody cover and channel bends, with simple ramps and earthen banks that suit small boats, kayaks, and shore fishing alike.

Twelve Mile Bayou

Feeding Cross Lake and the Red River on the northwest side of Shreveport, Twelve Mile Bayou is a reliable spot for blue and channel catfish, ambush-oriented largemouth, and toothy longnose gar; fish bends, deadfalls, and bridge pylons, with bank access at several crossings and small-boat exploration rewarded in quieter side channels.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 16 beaches and bays in this area.
