Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
October brings a strong fall bite around Bowleys Quarters with cooling water and schools of peanut bunker pushing into Middle River and Back River. Look for bird activity and slicks to locate roaming striped bass (rockfish); work 3–5 inch soft-plastic jigs or metal spoons along channel edges and points. Early dawn topwater over shallow flats can be explosive on calm mornings.
Mixed in, expect snapper bluefish slashing bait on the outgoing tide, plus white perch stacked on deeper pilings and hard bottom—small jigs or grass shrimp work well. Warmer afternoons with clean water may produce speckled trout and the occasional puppy drum around grass beds and creek mouths; try paddletails in natural hues. If winds kick up, tuck into leeward coves or probe deeper holes for channel catfish with fresh cut bait.
Best action aligns with moving tide, especially the first two hours of the outgoing. After a cold front, expect clearer water and a sharper bite window; before a front, fish can feed aggressively all day.
Top tip: Carry two rods—one rigged for topwater or a fluke for busting fish, the other with a 1/2 oz jig for quick drop-and-retrieve—so you can capitalize immediately when birds pin bait or marks pop on the finder.
