Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

October Fishing Report
October in Camp Springs brings cooling water on the tidal Potomac and nearby creeks, with grass beds thinning and baitfish schooling along drop-offs. The bite improves on moving tides, especially the first two hours of a falling tide.
Largemouth Bass are pushing shallow around remaining pads, laydowns, and creek mouths. Work shad-pattern lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs along the edges; switch to compact jigs or Texas rigs when the sun is high. Best action is dawn and dusk when wind ruffles the surface.
Crappie stack on bridge pilings and deeper marinas. Small jigs (1/32–1/16 oz) in natural shad colors or live minnows under a slip float produce steady bites. Blue Catfish are reliable on channel ledges; anchor up-current and fish fresh cut bait. If bait is busting at first light, keep a medium swimbait handy for roaming Striped Bass on current seams.
Top tip: Use side imaging to locate schools on the first significant drop from 4–10 feet, then circle back to present baits up-current so they sweep naturally through the fish.
