Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:6 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. The graph below shows you the 3 hourly weather progression over the next 7 days. Scroll the graph left or right to see more.

Fishing Overview Barnstable

Barnstable, Massachusetts sits between Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound, giving anglers access to productive saltwater grounds plus a network of classic Cape Cod kettle ponds. The town’s villages—Hyannis, Barnstable Harbor, Cotuit, Centerville, and others—offer launch ramps, beaches, and jetties that fish well from early spring through late fall, with pond fishing continuing all winter where ice allows safe access.

Striped bass are the headline species in Barnstable. In spring, schoolie stripers push into Barnstable Harbor, the Great Marshes, Cotuit Bay, and the inlets along Sandy Neck. Work soft plastics on jig heads, small swimming plugs, and sand eel imitations on moving tides, especially outgoing water flushing bait from the marshes. As water warms into June, larger bass hold on shoals in Cape Cod Bay and along the channel edges; drifting live mackerel, menhaden, or eels, or trolling tube-and-worm rigs, is highly effective.

By summer, dawn and dusk are prime for stripers along ocean-facing beaches and around jetties at Hyannisport and Osterville. Fly anglers do well with sparse sand eel and silverside patterns in the harbor and back-bay creeks. At night, target dock lights and bridge shadows with small soft plastics or swimmers; downsize leaders to maintain a natural presentation in the clear water.

Bluefish show up as waters warm, roaming rips off Barnstable Harbor and along Nantucket Sound. Look for bird activity and slicks, then cast metal spoons, poppers, or soft plastics rigged on wire or heavy fluorocarbon. Fluke and black sea bass are key bottom species from late spring through fall. Focus on sandy drops and channels for fluke and rocky humps, wrecks, and reef structure for sea bass. Drift bucktail jigs tipped with squid or Gulp, keeping contact with bottom and adjusting weight to tide strength.

Late summer and early fall bring fast-moving false albacore and bonito to the sounds and outer bays. Run-and-gun tactics are standard: stay to the side of surface feeds and cast metals or epoxy jigs that match rain bait and anchovies on light spinning or fly tackle. Offshore, long-range trips out of Hyannis chase bluefin and yellowfin tuna and groundfish like haddock and cod on deeper wrecks and ledges when conditions and seasons align.

Freshwater options are often overlooked but excellent. Kettle ponds such as Wequaquet Lake and other Barnstable ponds hold largemouth bass, pickerel, panfish, and seasonal trout. In spring and fall, focus on rocky points and drop-offs with jerkbaits, small swimbaits, and finesse plastics for bass. During summer, work early and late around weedlines with topwater frogs and poppers, switching to Texas-rigged plastics when the sun rises. Trout respond well to inline spinners, small spoons, and power-style baits fished near inflows, shaded banks, and deeper basins.

Tides, wind direction, and water clarity drive success around Barnstable. Plan saltwater trips around moving water, especially two hours around the top or bottom of the tide. Onshore winds can push bait close to beaches, improving surf and jetty action, while clear, calm days may require lighter leaders, longer casts, and more natural presentations. Whether you launch a boat, fish from a kayak, or walk the shoreline, Barnstable offers diverse, productive water for every style of angler.
