Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:13 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~13 days on 14th July
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    401,059 km
    Proximity:
    10.9 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Hillsdale

Fishing in Hillsdale, MI revolves primarily around Baw Beese Lake on the south side of town, along with several nearby small lakes and ponds. These natural and man-made waters offer classic southern Michigan multi-species fishing, with strong populations of largemouth bass, panfish, and pike in fishable numbers. Clear to slightly stained water, abundant weed growth, and a range of depths from shallow flats to mid-lake basins create reliable bites almost year-round.

Seasonal patterns are predictable. In early spring, as soon as the ice is gone and water temps push into the 40s and low 50s, look for perch, crappie, and bluegill to stage in the first breaks outside shallow coves and boat channels. Small jigs tipped with soft plastics or waxworms under a float are deadly when fished slow. Largemouth bass and pike hug dark-bottom bays that warm first; slow-rolled spinnerbaits, suspending jerkbaits, and compact jigs produce well.

Late spring into early summer is peak fishing around Hillsdale. Panfish push shallow to spawn in sandy pockets, protected shorelines, and around docks. Sight-fishing beds with tiny ice jigs, 1/32–1/16 oz marabou or tube jigs, and small pieces of live bait will fill a bucket quickly. Bass fan out along emergent weeds, reed clumps, and laydowns. Weightless soft stickbaits, wacky worms, and small Texas-rigged plastics shine in the shallow cover, while swim jigs and spinnerbaits work the outer weed edges.

By mid-summer, vegetation tops out in Baw Beese and nearby lakes, concentrating fish on distinct edges, points, and deeper offshore features. Early and late in the day, target thick weed beds and shade lines with hollow-body frogs, buzzbaits, and pitching jigs for quality largemouth bass. As the sun gets high, slide out to 8–15 feet and work drop-offs, humps, and the outside weedline with Carolina rigs, deep-running crankbaits, and Ned rigs. Crappie and bluegill suspend off the deep weed edge; a slip float rig set just above the weed tops keeps small jigs in the strike zone.

Fall fishing around Hillsdale is one of the most overlooked windows. As water cools, baitfish push shallow again, and bass and pike follow. Moving baits shine: squarebill crankbaits deflecting off sparse cover, spinnerbaits slow-rolled along weedlines, and swimbaits on 1/4–3/8 oz heads are consistent producers. Crappie and perch school tightly over mid-depth structure; use your electronics to locate pods of fish and vertically fish small jigs or small spoons.

Habitat and tactical tips for Hillsdale waters focus on reading weed growth and structure. Key areas include:

  • Shallow bays and boat channels for spring panfish and early-season bass
  • Submerged weedlines in 8–12 feet for summer and fall gamefish
  • Points, inside turns, and small humps for bass, walleye, and roaming panfish
  • Riprap, bridges, and dock lines for consistent multi-species action

Downsized presentations consistently excel in Hillsdale’s pressured waters. Light spinning gear with 4–8 lb line, small jigs, and subtle plastics will outfish oversized tackle on calm, bright days. When the wind blows and the water muddies, upsize to louder, more visible baits and cover water quickly until you connect with active schools. Match your approach to the season and water clarity, and Hillsdale’s lakes will reward persistent anglers with steady action and a realistic shot at quality fish.
