Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:20 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Midland

Fishing near Midland, Texas revolves around a handful of productive West Texas reservoirs and smaller community waters that fish best in low light and cooler months. Within easy driving distance, lakes and rivers offer dependable action for largemouth bass, catfish, crappie and sand (white) bass, with hybrid stripers and sunfish rounding out the mix. Wind, water clarity and seasonal heat are the key factors that shape day-to-day fishing success here.

Seasonal patterns around Midland follow the classic desert-reservoir cycle. Late winter through early spring is prime for prespawn bass and staging catfish. Look for bass on north-facing coves and protected shorelines where water warms first; slow-roll medium-diving crankbaits, lipless cranks, and 3–4 inch soft-plastic swimbaits along rock transitions and flooded brush. Catfish stack on deeper channel edges and around riprap; cut shad and punch baits on Carolina or slip-sinker rigs work well.

By late spring, bass move shallow to spawn in protected pockets and along gravel banks. Sight-fishing with Texas-rigged creature baits, weightless stick worms and small jigs produces, especially where mesquite and saltcedar meet harder bottom. Crappie concentrate on brush, flooded timber and riprap in 6–12 feet; minnows under a slip float or 1/16–1/8 oz marabou and tube jigs are consistent.

Summer fishing around Midland is dominated by heat and wind. The most reliable bite is at first and last light. Bass pull to deeper ledges, humps and points in 15–30 feet; Carolina rigs, football jigs, big worms and deep-diving crankbaits are go-to options. Watch for surface schooling white bass and hybrids pushing shad—keep a small box of 1/4–1/2 oz spoons, tail-spins and topwaters ready to cast into busting fish. Overnight into early morning is prime time for channel and blue catfish on main-lake points and windblown banks using cut bait or prepared stinkbaits.

Fall brings some of the most comfortable and productive fishing. Cooling water pulls baitfish shallow and triggers bass to roam flats, backs of coves, and creek arms. Cover water with spinnerbaits, square-bill crankbaits and walking topwaters over rock, brush and shallow grass. Crappie shift back to mid-depth brush piles and bridge pilings, while white bass and hybrids chase shad along wind-blown shorelines and main-lake structure.

Habitat and tactical tips around Midland’s reservoirs focus on rock, brush and man-made structure. Key areas include:

  • Windblown points and riprap for bass, white bass, hybrids and catfish.
  • Submerged brush piles, docks and timber for crappie and sunfish.
  • Main-lake humps, ledges and old creek channels for deep-summer bass and cats.

Because water is often clear to lightly stained, finesse tactics can outproduce power fishing on calm, sunny days. Downsize to 6–10 lb fluorocarbon, use natural shad and green pumpkin colors, and approach key spots quietly. When West Texas wind chops the surface, take advantage by upsizing baits and covering water with reaction lures—spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and crankbaits shine in stained, windswept water.

Boat anglers should rely heavily on electronics to locate bait schools, main-lake structure and brush piles, especially in hot weather. Shore anglers do best near dams, bridges, fishing piers and areas with riprap or visible current. Regardless of season, early and late in the day, focusing on shade, wind and baitfish will consistently produce more fish around Midland’s desert lakes.
