Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Saginaw
Saginaw, Michigan offers anglers a diverse mix of big-water and river fishing thanks to its position on the Saginaw River just upstream from Saginaw Bay. This system is best known for walleye and perch, but bass, pike, catfish, panfish, and seasonal trout runs give locals and traveling anglers reliable action in every month of the year.
Seasonal patterns drive the bite. Late winter through early spring sees walleye pushing up the Saginaw River from the bay to stage and spawn. Anglers focus on deeper river holes, bridge areas, and current seams with jig-and-minnow combos or plastics on 3/8–1/2 oz jigs, depending on flow. As water warms in late spring, fish slide back toward the bay; trolling crankbaits and crawler harnesses along the lower river and river mouth becomes a dominant pattern.
Summer fishing shifts heavily to Saginaw Bay, but the river near Saginaw continues to hold catfish, drum, bass, and some resident walleye. Night fishing with cut bait or live bait on bottom rigs produces channel and flathead catfish around bends, pilings, and deep eddies. Panfish and bass relate to marinas, riprap, and any submerged wood. In fall, cooler water pulls roaming walleye and perch closer to river channels and nearshore edges; jigs and live minnows worked tight to bottom shine when fish begin to regroup.
Winter brings a strong ice-fishing tradition to the Saginaw system, particularly on the bay, but safe ice can occasionally form in backwaters and connected areas near Saginaw. Anglers target walleye and perch with jigging spoons, swim baits, and deadstick presentations using minnows. Mobility is key: drill multiple holes along breaklines and subtle depressions until you mark fish, then work baits just off bottom.
The habitat around Saginaw mixes river current, man-made structure, and transition zones to the bay. In the river, concentrate on:
- Channel edges and current breaks behind pilings, bridge abutments, and bends
- Deep holes and scour areas below bridges for walleye and catfish
- Riprap and dock lines for bass, drum, and panfish
On the Saginaw Bay side, target:
- Shallow flats with emerging weeds in late spring for post-spawn walleye and perch
- Subtle drops from 8–15 feet where trolling spinners and crankbaits shines
- Rocky or gravelly patches that concentrate smallmouth, especially in summer
Techniques and tactical tips are straightforward but detail-driven. When the river is running high and stained, use heavier jigs, brighter colors, and add scent or live minnows to help fish locate your offering. Vertical jig directly below the boat to stay in contact with bottom, lifting just enough to feel the thump. In moderate current, drift presentations downstream while subtly hopping the jig.
For Saginaw Bay trolling, use planer boards to spread lines and cover water. In stained water, choose noisy, high-contrast crankbaits; in clearer conditions, natural patterns and slower speeds often outproduce. Watch your sonar for bait clouds and subtle changes in depth; small contour shifts frequently hold big pods of walleye and perch.
Bass and pike anglers do well with spinnerbaits, swimbaits, and jigs around weed edges and any hard-cover transition. In warmer months, early morning topwater near calm marinas and shoreline cover can produce aggressive strikes from both smallmouth and largemouth bass.
Whether you launch onto Saginaw Bay or work the Saginaw River right in town, focusing on seasonal movements, current edges, and depth transitions will consistently put fish in the boat across this productive Michigan fishery.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 3 beaches and bays in this area.
