Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:25 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Columbus

Fishing around Columbus, Ohio is built on a mix of river systems, large reservoirs, and well-managed park lakes that keep rods bending in every season. The Scioto and Olentangy rivers slice right through the city, while nearby Alum Creek Lake, Hoover Reservoir, and Griggs and O’Shaughnessy reservoirs provide reliable multi-species action.

Seasonal patterns drive success here. In early spring, focus on warming shallows and creek arms on Alum Creek and Hoover for prespawn largemouth bass, crappie, and saugeye. Slow-rolled swimbaits, hair jigs, and small crappie tubes under floats shine when the water is still cold. By late spring and early summer, dawn and dusk topwater bites kick off on Griggs and O’Shaughnessy for bass and white bass along riprap shorelines and points.

Summer in Columbus means night and low-light missions. Target channel catfish and flathead catfish in the Scioto River below dams and along deep outside bends using cut shad, live bluegill, or chicken livers on slip-sinker rigs. In the reservoirs, work deeper offshore structure—points, humps, and submerged roadbeds—for saugeye and walleye by vertically jigging blade baits or trolling crawler harnesses along contour breaks.

Fall may be the most overlooked season. Cooling water pushes crappie, white bass, and hybrid striped bass to chase shad in the upper ends of Alum Creek and Hoover. Watch for surface activity and birds; cast small spoons, inline spinners, or 2–3" paddle-tails into the frenzy. Bass slide shallow again, where squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and compact jigs fished around wood and riprap can produce heavy bags.

Winter doesn’t shut things down in Columbus. On mild days, the Scioto and Olentangy rivers stay productive for smallmouth and saugeye around dams and current seams. Use small jig-and-minnow combinations, 1/8–1/4 oz hair jigs, and slowly worked blade baits tight to bottom. In the deeper reservoirs, vertical presentations with spoons or jigging rap-style lures around channel edges are the best bet for saugeye and walleye.

Key habitat types to target include:

  • Riprap banks and bridge pilings on Griggs, O’Shaughnessy, and Hoover for bass, crappie, and catfish.
  • Rocky current breaks, wing dams, and dam tailwaters on the Scioto and Olentangy for smallmouth, saugeye, and catfish.
  • Standing timber and brush in Alum Creek’s coves for crappie and largemouth bass.
  • Weed edges and shallow flats in metro-park ponds, which are regularly stocked with panfish and trout.

Tactical tips: Scale down line in the clear waters of Alum Creek and Hoover—6–8 lb fluorocarbon for finesse bass and crappie—while the murkier Scioto allows heavier mono or braid. Keep a three-rod approach: a medium spinning rod with a jig or soft plastic, a medium-heavy casting rod for moving baits, and a heavier outfit for bottom rigs and catfish. Mobility is crucial in the rivers; hop between current seams, eddies, and depth transitions until you contact fish, then thoroughly work that section before moving again.
