Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:9 hours of daylight. Fishing Overview Hattiesburg

Hattiesburg fishing revolves around a network of small lakes, urban ponds, and tannic Pine Belt rivers that stay fishable almost all year. Anglers can target largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish in waters like Lake Terral, Lake Byron, and the lakes at Paul B. Johnson State Park just south of town, while the Bouie and Leaf rivers offer a more riverine experience with current seams, logjams, and sandbars.

Seasonal patterns are predictable in south Mississippi. Late winter through spring is prime time for crappie and largemouth bass in the Hattiesburg area lakes. As water temps climb into the 60s, work the backs of coves, flooded grass, and secondary points where bass stage and spawn; crappie stack along brush, stake beds, and creek channels. Summer pushes fish deeper and closer to shade and current. Hit first and last light with topwaters for bass around riprap, docks, and dam faces, then shift to deeper points and channel drops with soft plastics or deep-diving crankbaits as the sun rises. Fall brings a strong shallow bite again as shad move into pockets and coves, while winter calls for slower presentations along drop-offs and around vertical cover like bridge pilings and timber.

Habitat types around Hattiesburg include stump-filled impoundments, grass edges, creek mouths, and soft-bottom rivers with scattered wood. In the lakes, focus on:

  • Riprap and dam faces for bass, especially on wind-blown banks.
  • Man-made brush piles and piers for crappie and bluegill.
  • Shallow grass lines and lily pads for topwater bass and bream.
  • Old creek channels and points for summer and winter holding areas.

On the Bouie and Leaf rivers, key in on outside bends with deeper holes for catfish, sandy inside bends for bream, and woody laydowns for bass and chain pickerel.

Common techniques are straightforward and effective. For bass, Texas-rigged worms, creature baits, and craws in green pumpkin or junebug work well in the area’s stained water. Spinnerbaits and square-bill crankbaits are strong search baits along grass and wood, while walking topwaters and buzzbaits shine at dawn and dusk. Crappie anglers do well slow-trolling or single-poling small jigs (1/16–1/32 oz) and live minnows around brush and vertical cover. For bream, a simple worm or cricket under a float around shoreline cover will put fast action on the board, especially from April through June.

Catfish tactics around Hattiesburg focus on cut shad, chicken livers, or commercial stink baits fished on bottom rigs near channel edges, bridge holes, and the downstream side of dams. In the rivers, drift baits along current seams or anchor above logjams and let the scent trail work downstream. Night fishing can be especially productive in the heat of summer.

For shore-bound anglers, Hattiesburg’s public lakes and park ponds provide ample bank access, mowed shorelines, and fishing piers. A medium spinning outfit, a small tackle tray of soft plastics, a few bobbers, hooks, and split shot is enough to cover bass, bream, and catfish on a quick after-work session. Boaters and kayak anglers gain access to offshore humps, submerged timber, and mid-lake channels, which often hold the heaviest fish, especially in midsummer.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
