Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Meridian
Fishing in Meridian, Mississippi revolves around Okatibbee Lake, the Chunky and Chickasawhay rivers, and numerous smaller lakes, ponds and creeks that give anglers a wide range of bass, crappie and catfish options. Warm Southern weather means you can fish nearly every month of the year, but success hinges on understanding seasonal patterns and how fish use local habitat.
Spring is prime time around Meridian. On Okatibbee Lake, largemouth bass push shallow into coves, flooded brush and protected pockets as water temps move through the 60s. Target secondary points leading into spawning pockets with spinnerbaits, squarebill crankbaits and Texas-rigged soft plastics. As the spawn gets underway, slow down with soft stickbaits and lizards around any visible cover: stumps, laydowns and shoreline brush are key. Crappie stage on channel edges and brush piles just off spawning coves, then move into flooded grass and woody cover in 3–8 feet; jigs under a fixed or slip float and small minnows are top producers.
By summer, Meridian’s waters warm quickly and fish slide deeper. On Okatibbee, bass set up on main-lake points, humps, creek-channel swings and the dam face. Deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs and big worms shine when worked along bottom transitions and scattered brush. Night fishing is highly effective: focus on lighted boat docks, riprap, and the first drop-offs near shore with dark-colored soft plastics and slow-rolled spinnerbaits. Catfish action peaks on the Chunky and Chickasawhay rivers and in Okatibbee’s river channels and flats. Use cut shad, chicken livers or stink baits on slip-sinker rigs, positioning just off the main current seams or on outside bends where holes and logjams collect fish.
In fall, shad schools drive the bite. Bass and hybrid stripers often push baitfish to the surface on Okatibbee and other area lakes, especially on wind-blown banks and main-lake pockets. Keep a medium-sized lipless crankbait or shad-style swimbait handy to cover water fast when fish are schooling. Work creek arms from the mouth to the back, focusing on channel bends and any shallow flats adjacent to deep water. Crappie regroup on brush piles, standing timber and bridge pilings; vertical jigging with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs in natural or chartreuse colors is efficient once you mark fish on electronics.
Winter fishing around Meridian is about slowing down and concentrating on vertical structure and deeper holes. Bass relate tightly to channel ledges, submerged timber and the dam area on clearer lakes; jigs, shaky heads and blade baits hopped slowly along the bottom excel. Crappie stack in deeper timber and along river and creek channels—light line, small jigs and a patient, vertical presentation are critical. On the rivers, catfish hold in the deepest wintering holes; present cut bait very close to the bottom and be prepared to wait out fewer but larger bites.
Local habitat is a mix of stained to muddy water, abundant wood cover, seasonal vegetation and classic Southern river structure. Practical tips: use darker, bulkier baits in muddy conditions; upsize line in heavy cover; and always pay attention to recent rain, which can quickly change water color and current in the Meridian area. Cover water until you find active fish, then refine depth and speed—small adjustments in this region pay off fast.
