Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Pascagoula
Pascagoula, Mississippi sits where the Pascagoula River spills into the Mississippi Sound, creating a prime mix of brackish marsh, river channels and quick access to the Gulf of Mexico. This variety of habitat supports excellent inshore, nearshore and offshore fishing almost every month of the year.
Seasonal patterns drive how and where anglers fish around Pascagoula. In late winter and early spring, speckled trout and redfish stage in deeper bayous, ship channels and around industrial structure where water temperatures are a bit warmer. As water climbs into the 70s, trout spread across grass flats, shell bottoms and current-swept points in the lower Pascagoula River and Mississippi Sound. Summer brings peak action for trout at sunrise and after dark under lights, while tripletail start hanging under crab trap buoys and channel markers. Offshore, cobia, king mackerel and snapper become primary targets on rigs and wrecks. In fall, cooling water pushes trout and redfish into the marsh drains and bayous, often producing the year’s best topwater bite. Winter sees fish sliding deeper again—focus on ship channels, bridge pilings and protected bayous when cold fronts roll through.
Key habitat types around Pascagoula include the main river, its tributary bayous, marsh ponds, man-made structure and open Sound. The lower Pascagoula River and its side bayous (like Bangs Lake and surrounding marsh) hold redfish, flounder, black drum and trout around shell bars, submerged logs and cuts with moving water. The industrial shoreline, docks and pilings near the port attract sheepshead, drum and trout. Out in the Mississippi Sound, look for oyster reefs, gas rigs and artificial reefs to concentrate bait and gamefish. Farther south, the barrier islands and offshore rigs provide classic structure for snapper, grouper, kings and cobia.
Effective techniques depend on the species and season. For speckled trout, drifting or trolling over shell and sand flats with soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads is a staple approach; adjust jig weight to current and depth. In low light or choppy conditions, walk-the-dog topwaters and popping corks with shrimp imitations draw aggressive strikes. Redfish respond well to gold spoons, weedless paddle tails and live shrimp pitched tight to grass edges, points and drains with visible current. In the marsh, think shallow—poling or quietly drifting to sight-fish tailing reds can be productive on calm days.
For structure-oriented species like sheepshead and drum, drop live or fresh shrimp straight down beside pilings, rocks and dock legs on light Carolina rigs. Use just enough weight to hold bottom and keep leaders short to reduce snags. Tripletail specialists slowly idle along channel markers and crab trap lines, casting live shrimp or small jigs past the upcurrent side of the floater and working the bait back naturally with the tide.
Nearshore and offshore tactics revolve around rigs and reefs. Free-line or lightly weight live menhaden or hardtails for cobia and king mackerel around surface structure. For red snapper and other bottom species, drop cut bait or live bait on fish-finder or two-hook rigs directly over hard bottom, wrecks and platform legs, watching your sonar to stay on the most promising marks. When current is strong, heavier sinkers and braided main line help keep your baits vertical.
Across all of Pascagoula’s waters, tide and water clarity are critical. Plan trips around moving water, target wind-protected shorelines after strong blows, and downsize leaders and lures when the Sound runs clear to consistently connect with Pascagoula’s diverse fishery.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 18 beaches and bays in this area.
