Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Vicksburg
Fishing around Vicksburg, MS is built around the Mississippi River and its network of oxbows, barrow pits, and flooded timber sloughs. The big river holds trophy catfish and multi-species action in heavy current, while nearby backwaters and lakes provide classic southern bass, crappie, and bream fishing with more manageable conditions.
Seasonally, patterns shift with river level and water temperature. In late winter and early spring, rising water pushes fish into backwaters, side channels, and flooded timber. Crappie and bream stage along submerged brush and treetops just off the river, while pre-spawn largemouths slide into warmer, quieter pockets. As spring progresses, target the mouths of bayous and cuts off the main river—these transition zones can load up with crappie and bass feeding on shad and minnows washed in from the current.
By summer, much of the best fishing around Vicksburg centers on deeper structure and current breaks. Catfish anglers focus on ledges, outside bends, and scour holes near the main channel, especially where rock revetments or wing dikes create eddies. Bass and white bass hold around riprap, barge tie-offs, and submerged timber in secondary channels. Early and late in the day, work shallow sandbars and points with topwaters and moving baits; shift deeper with jigs and soft plastics as the sun climbs.
Habitat variety is a major advantage here. The main Mississippi River offers deep channels, rock banks, and sandbars, while adjacent oxbows and borrow pits feature still water, brush, and lily pads. In backwaters, focus on any wood: stumps, laydowns, and treetops. In the river, current seams, eddies behind wing dikes, and the downstream side of islands are high-percentage areas. When the river is high, fish push tight to shoreline cover; as it falls, follow them back to the first significant drop or channel edge.
Common techniques around Vicksburg are straightforward but very location-specific:
- Catfish: Target blues and channels with cut shad, skipjack, or shiners on slip-sinker rigs in 20–50 feet of water along channel bends, drops, and outside revetments. Drift or bump baits downstream to cover water, or anchor just above a ledge and present baits on the edge of current.
- Crappie: In oxbows and calm sloughs, vertical jig or spider-rig with minnows around submerged brush and treetops. When the water is stained, use bright tube jigs; in clearer water, natural shad and monkey milk colors excel.
- Bass: Work crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and Texas-rigged plastics along riprap, barge walls, and laydowns in side channels. In backwaters with vegetation, frogs, buzzbaits, and swim jigs are productive, especially at dawn and dusk.
- Bream: Fish crickets or red worms under a small float along weed edges, cypress knees, and shallow brush. Once you locate a bedding area in late spring or early summer, you can quickly put together a mess of bluegill and redear.
Tactical tip for Vicksburg’s big water: Always read the current. Fish set up where they can hold out of the heaviest flow but still access food drifting by. Look for subtle current seams, boils, and color changes on the surface, then position your boat just upstream and present baits naturally downstream into those breaks.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 11 beaches and bays in this area.
