Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Carthage
Carthage, Texas sits in the heart of some of the best freshwater fishing in East Texas, with the Sabine River system, Toledo Bend Reservoir, and several local lakes all within easy reach. Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bream year-round, with seasonal runs of white bass and excellent multi-species opportunities for both boat and bank fishermen.
Seasonally, spring is prime time around Carthage. As water warms into the 60s, largemouth bass push shallow along protected coves, feeder creeks, and flooded brush on area lakes and the backwaters of the Sabine River. Soft plastics like Texas-rigged creature baits, weightless flukes, and wacky-rigged worms shine around shoreline cover and boat docks. Slow-rolling spinnerbaits and shallow crankbaits along secondary points and timber edges also produce. Crappie stack on brush piles, bridge pilings, and standing timber; small jigs in natural shad or chartreuse patterns fished just above the fish are consistent producers.
Summer shifts the bite deeper. On Toledo Bend and local reservoirs, bass relate to offshore structure—humps, ledges, and channel swings. Look for bait on your electronics, then work deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and football jigs along breaks in 12–25 feet. Night fishing is popular: slow-roll big spinnerbaits along lighted docks and main-lake points, or hop a big worm through brush piles. Catfish action is steady all summer on the Sabine River and impoundments; punch bait or cut shad fished on slip rigs in deeper holes, outside bends, and along channel edges finds channel and blue cats, while live bait near wood cover is better for flatheads.
Fall brings some of the most consistent fishing around Carthage as baitfish move shallow again. Bass chase shad in creeks, drains, and windblown banks. Keep a shad-colored squarebill, lipless crankbait, or small swimbait ready to fire into schooling activity. Work topwaters early and late along grass edges and riprap. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush and docks; vertical jigging or tight-lining minnows over 10–18 feet of water is effective. White bass and yellow bass school on river channel flats and main-lake points—watch for surface activity and birds, then cast small spoons or tail-spinners.
Winter fishing near Carthage centers on deeper, slower presentations. Bass group on vertical structure—bluff walls, timbered creek channels, and steep points. Jigs, suspending jerkbaits, and shaky heads fished deliberately can coax quality bites. Crappie concentrate tightly on the most stable deep cover; use electronics to pinpoint schools, then downsize jigs and hold them almost motionless in the strike zone. Catfishing remains viable in the Sabine River’s deep bends and wintering holes using fresh cut bait presented on bottom rigs.
Habitat variety is a major strength of the Carthage area. Anglers can target river current on the Sabine, working eddies, laydowns, and sandbar edges for bass and catfish, or hit the expansive timbered flats and creek arms of Toledo Bend for classic East Texas reservoir fishing. Smaller local lakes and farm ponds offer outstanding bank access for bluegill, redear sunfish, and bass; simple float rigs with worms or crickets produce fast action for panfish, especially for family trips.
To fish efficiently, focus on three keys: match forage, fish the transitions, and use your electronics. Shad-hued lures excel when baitfish are present, while darker soft plastics imitate crawfish on rocky or clay banks. Transitions—where grass meets timber, mud meets rock, or shallow flats drop into channels—consistently hold fish. On larger waters, side-scan and down-imaging speed up the process of locating brush piles, ledges, and schools of crappie, bass, or white bass. With its blend of river and reservoir options, the Carthage area rewards anglers who adapt to seasonal patterns and cover water until they find the active bite.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
