Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:51 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. Fishing Overview Rolla

Rolla, Missouri sits in the heart of the northern Ozarks, putting anglers close to a network of spring-fed streams and big river water. Within 30 minutes you can be on the Little Piney Creek, Gasconade River, Mill Creek, and the trout-rich waters around Maramec Spring, all offering distinct habitat and technique options. Clear water, mixed gravel-and-bedrock bottoms, and strong current define much of the fishing here, so stealthy presentations and light tackle consistently outperform heavy gear.

Seasonal patterns around Rolla revolve largely around water temperature and flow. In late winter and early spring, rainbow and brown trout in the Little Piney and Mill Creek are most active during midday when the sun bumps water temps a few degrees; small nymphs and micro-jigs under light indicators excel. As spring progresses, smallmouth bass and goggle-eye in the Gasconade and its tributaries push shallow onto rocky banks and pointsβ€”prime time for 2–4 inch soft-plastic grubs, small craw imitations, and suspending jerkbaits.

Summer fishing near Rolla is dominated by dawn and dusk bites. The cold, spring-fed reaches of Little Piney, Mill Creek, and the upper Gasconade remain productive for trout and smallmouth, but you’ll do best with ultra-natural approaches: 4–6 lb fluorocarbon, small in-line spinners, micro crankbaits, and #16–#20 dry flies when hatches pop off. Catfish action on the Gasconade and larger pools of nearby creeks improves as water warms; focus on deeper bends, logjams, and riprap with cut bait or live sunfish after dark.

Fall brings some of the most consistent multi-species fishing Rolla anglers see all year. Cooling water pushes smallmouth and spotted bass back onto chunk rock banks and current seams, where they hammer small squarebill crankbaits, finesse jigs, and topwater walkers. Trout in the Little Piney and Maramec-area waters respond well to streamers and larger nymphs as flows increase with autumn rains. Crappie and panfish in slower side channels and nearby small lakes set up on standing timber and brush; vertical jigging small tubes is efficient for finding schools quickly.

Key habitats include riffle-run-pool sequences on the Little Piney and Mill Creek, mid-depth ledges and bouldery outside bends on the Gasconade, and any spring inflow where cold water enters a main channel. In clear, shallow stretches, work upstream, casting ahead and to the sides to avoid pushing fish. In deeper Gasconade holes, use a kayak or small johnboat to position just upstream of structure and drift baits or lures back naturally with the current.

Productive techniques around Rolla start with finesse. For trout, think 1/32–1/64 oz marabou jigs, tiny spinners, and bead-head nymphs in natural colors like olive, brown, and black. For smallmouth, 1/8–1/4 oz ned rigs, small craw jigs, and compact topwaters produce year-round. Panfish respond to simple rigs: a small float, size 8–10 hook, and a piece of worm around laydowns and weed edges. When chasing catfish, step up to heavier main line but keep sinkers just heavy enough to hold bottom in the Gasconade’s current.

Stealth is critical in the Rolla area’s clear Ozark waters. Wear drab clothing, keep wading noise to a minimum, and downsize line when the bite gets tough. Cover water methodicallyβ€”especially in long runs and mid-depth bendsβ€”and let the current work for you. With attention to seasonal shifts and precise presentations, the streams and rivers surrounding Rolla consistently reward anglers who fish thoughtfully and adapt to the conditions.
