Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Elko
Elko fishing centers on a mix of stocked stillwaters and wild trout streams framed by the Ruby Mountains and high desert valleys. Within an hour of town you’ll find cold tailwater-style creeks, irrigation reservoirs, and small lakes that offer year-round options for bank, boat, and ice anglers.
From late March through early June, rising flows and cold snowmelt drive the best river and stream fishing. The Humboldt River and its tributaries near Elko hold wild browns, rainbows, and mountain whitefish. Nymphing with small beadhead mayflies and caddis (sizes 14–18) under indicators is reliable, especially in deeper runs and seams. Spin anglers score by drifting small gold or copper spinners and 1/16–1/8 oz marabou jigs through current breaks and undercut banks.
Stillwaters such as South Fork Reservoir, Wildhorse Reservoir, and the smaller community and ranch ponds around Elko shine from spring through late fall. Ice-out is prime for large rainbow and brown trout cruising the shallows; work 1/8–1/4 oz spoons, suspending hardbaits, or woolly buggers and leech patterns on intermediate lines along points and flooded brush. As water warms into summer, shift deeper to the first major breaklines and old channel edges, targeting dawn and last light with slip bobber rigs and nightcrawlers or slow-rolled swimbaits.
Summer in the Elko area also brings dependable warmwater fishing. Largemouth and smallmouth bass in local reservoirs relate to rock, flooded timber, and weed edges. Early and late, throw small topwaters, poppers, and weightless soft plastics over shallow flats; as the sun gets high, move to 10–25 feet with drop-shot rigs, jig worms, and craw-imitating jigs. Panfish like bluegill, perch, and green sunfish stack around docks, riprap, and cattail edges—perfect targets for small jigs tipped with worms under a fixed or slip float.
Fall is trophy time around Elko. Brown trout and larger rainbows feed aggressively ahead of winter, especially on overcast days and during the first cold fronts. Work larger streamers (2–4 inches) along rocky banks, dam faces, and inlet mouths, or throw 1/4 oz spoons and jerkbaits for reaction bites. On streams, focus on deeper pools and soft edges; euro-style nymphing with tungsten patterns helps stay in the strike zone as flows drop and clear.
Ice fishing is a major draw at higher-elevation reservoirs and ponds when safe ice forms, typically mid-winter. Trout respond well to small tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms or mealworms, fished just off bottom or a few feet under the ice when fish cruise high. For perch and panfish, use downsized glow jigs and light line; keep holes moving until you contact a school, then stay mobile to follow shifting groups. A flasher or basic sonar greatly increases efficiency on Elko’s larger reservoirs.
Across the Elko region, success comes from matching tactics to water type: subtle presentations and stealth on clear streams; structure-oriented approaches on reservoirs; and depth, mobility, and small baits through the ice. Focus on key windows—early, late, and weather changes—and you’ll consistently connect with Elko’s trout, bass, and panfish throughout the year.
