Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:25 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~14 days on 29th July
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    369,879 km
    Proximity:
    84.1 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Las Vegas

Fishing around Las Vegas centers on big, clear Colorado River reservoirs and heavily stocked urban ponds. Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are the main draws for bass and stripers, while city parks across the valley provide easy access for quick sessions before or after exploring the Strip. The desert climate keeps the season open all year, but tactics shift dramatically with water temperature and light conditions.

Seasonally, spring and fall are prime for bass around Las Vegas. From March through May, largemouth and smallmouth push shallow on Lake Mead’s points, pockets, and flooded brush. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and 3–4 inch soft-plastic swimbaits in shad or green pumpkin excel along rocky transitions and submerged bushes. Fall (late September–November) brings baitfish to the surface; watch for boiling schools of shad and target schooling stripers and smallmouth with topwaters, walking baits, and small jigging spoons.

Summer fishing means early and late sessions. Midday heat and bright sun push fish deep or tight to shade. On Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, focus on main-lake points, ledges, and submerged humps in 20–40 feet using drop-shot rigs, Carolina rigs, and vertical jigging spoons. Light fluorocarbon and compact finesse plastics in natural colors are critical in the ultra-clear water. Night fishing is extremely productive in summer for catfish and stripersβ€”anchor near drop-offs, chum lightly if allowed, and soak cut bait or live shad under a slip sinker rig.

Winter cools water temperatures and slows fish metabolism, but deep structure produces consistent catches. Stripers group tightly on channel edges and submerged roadbeds; use electronics to locate stacked fish and present spoons or soft-plastic flukes on heavy jig heads straight beneath the boat. On urban ponds like Floyd Lamb, Sunset Park, and Lorenzi Park, winter is prime time for stocked rainbow trout. Small inline spinners, salmon eggs, dough baits, and tiny spoons fished slowly produce steady action, especially early in the morning.

Habitat-wise, Las Vegas anglers work three main environments:

  • Big reservoirs (Lake Mead & Lake Mohave) – Clear, deep, rocky basins with long points, sheer walls, and flooded coves. Focus on rock transitions, wind-blown banks, and any remaining brush or artificial habitat.
  • Colorado River tailwater sections – Current seams, eddies, and deeper holes hold stripers, catfish, and occasional bass. Heavy jig heads, swimbaits, and cut bait are standard.
  • Urban lakes and community ponds – Smaller, often stocked waters ideal for beginners and quick trips. Work corners with inflow, aerators, and any man-made structure like docks or rock piles.

Tactically, stealth and timing are crucial in the clear desert reservoirs. Use long casts, lighter line, and natural baitfish colors under bright skies. Low-light windowsβ€”first light, last light, and overcast daysβ€”allow more aggressive presentations and bigger topwater profiles. Always watch for birds diving, nervous bait, or surface boils; in Las Vegas, visual cues can put you directly on fast-moving striper schools. For bank anglers, targeting marina edges, fishing piers, and steep shoreline points gives the best depth range and access to roaming fish throughout the year.

The Best Fishing Spots around Las Vegas

Lake Mead

The largest reservoir in the U.S. offers expansive fishing for striped bass, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill; spring and fall bring active bass bites, while summer striper boils can be fast-paced in open waterβ€”launch from hubs like Hemenway Harbor or Callville Bay to roam coves, points, and deep structures.

Boulder Beach

A popular shore-access area on Lake Mead with long, gently sloping beaches ideal for casting for striped bass, catfish, and panfish; morning and evening are prime, and nearby rocky points and drop-offs hold bassβ€”kayaks and small boats can also work the nearshore for roaming schools, with Hemenway Harbor close by.

Hemenway Harbor

A key marina and launch on Lake Mead that provides quick access to open-water striped bass and shoreline structure for smallmouth, plus night fishing for channel catfish; schools often push bait near points and marina lights, and it’s a convenient base relative to Las Vegas.

Callville Bay

Located on Lake Mead’s north shore, this bay features coves, submerged humps, and rocky banks that attract largemouth and smallmouth bass, with roaming striped bass frequently corralling bait in the main bayβ€”launch from the marina or work shoreline points early and late; it’s a good alternative to Boulder Beach.

Las Vegas Bay

A classic Lake Mead arm with nutrient inflow and ample structure where striped bass cruise open water and largemouth/smallmouth bass relate to breaks and brush; cooler months see fish push shallow on sunny afternoons, and it’s within easy reach of Henderson and Las Vegas.

Willow Beach

On the Colorado River below Hoover Dam, Willow Beach is known for clear, cold water with rainbow trout (stocked), striped bass that shadow trout, and smallmouth bass around rocky ledges; kayak and boat anglers work current seams and deep runs, while shore anglers target eddiesβ€”an excellent contrast to Lake Mead’s open water.

Lake Mohave

Stretching between Hoover and Davis dams, this long reservoir offers superb smallmouth bass around rocky points, striped bass in deeper basins, and catfish after dark; access from Cottonwood Cove (NV) or Katherine Landing (AZ), with clearer water and strong structure fishing compared to Lake Mead.

Echo Bay

Up on Lake Mead’s Overton Arm, Echo Bay holds striped bass schools in open water and solid largemouth/smallmouth opportunities along rocky shorelines and flooded cover; seasonal shad movements drive action, and it’s a less crowded option than Hemenway Harbor or Boulder Beach.

Government Wash

A well-known Lake Mead shoreline and cove complex where anglers target striped bass from points and channels and catfish after sundown; the broken shoreline, flats, and drop-offs make it versatile for shore casting and small-boat/kayak approaches, with quick access from Henderson.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
