Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Brooklyn
Brooklyn fishing revolves around three main saltwater zones: the Lower New York Harbor and Narrows (around Bay Ridge and the Verrazzano), the protected waters of Jamaica Bay (especially from Canarsie and Floyd Bennett), and the deeper channels and reefs off Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay. Each area has its own seasonal rhythm and demands slightly different tactics.
Spring kicks off with striped bass pushing up the harbor and into Jamaica Bay. Shore anglers score at Bay Ridge and Owl’s Head piers by casting 1–2 oz bucktails or 4–6 inch soft plastics on jig heads along current seams. In Jamaica Bay, work creek mouths and channel edges with swimmers and soft plastics around dawn and dusk. Live bunker, if available, is deadly: snag a bunker on a treble, then re-hook it through the nose or back and fish it on a fish-finder rig just off bottom. Smaller schoolie stripers and weakfish hit pink and chartreuse soft plastics on 3/8–1/2 oz jig heads in calmer back-bay water.
By early summer, bluefish, fluke, and porgies dominate. Bluefish patrol Brooklyn’s piers and beaches; metal spoons, diamond jigs, and surface poppers produce when birds are working. Use wire or heavy fluorocarbon leaders to reduce cut-offs. For fluke, focus on sandy bottoms off Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and across Jamaica Bay channels. Drift bucktail jigs tipped with Gulp! swimming mullets or strips of squid, keeping your rig bouncing just above the bottom. When current is light, a simple high-low rig with squid and spearing catches plenty of short fluke and keeper fish mixed in.
Porgy and sea bass fishing peaks in mid to late summer around rock piles, bridge pilings, and artificial structure. From shore, concentrate around the Verrazzano vicinity, jetty rocks, and any riprap-lined shoreline. A hi-lo rig with size 1–2 bait-holder hooks and 2–4 oz bank sinker is standard; bait with clam strips, squid, or sandworms. Keep leaders short (4–6 inches) to avoid snags and to feel the pecking bites. Party boats out of Sheepshead Bay anchor over reefs and wrecks, dropping simple bait rigs straight down; staying in contact with the sinker and setting quickly is key to hooking porgies and sea bass.
Fall is Brooklyn’s prime time. Striped bass and larger bluefish key on migrating bunker and schools of spearing. Work the surf at Coney Island and from harbor piers with swimmers, metal-lip plugs, and larger soft plastics. At night, concentrate around lighted structure, bridge shadows, and current edges; a slow, steady retrieve with a 5–7 inch soft plastic on a 3/4–1 oz jig is hard to beat. False albacore and bonito occasionally blitz off ocean-facing beaches and jetties; keep a small metals and epoxy jigs ready on a light spinning setup to fire into fast-moving schools.
As water cools further, blackfish (tautog) move onto nearshore rockpiles, bridge pilings, and jetty edges. This is precision bottom fishing. Use a stout rod, 30–50 lb braid, and a single-hook or snafu rig with 3–6 oz of lead, depending on current. Green crabs or Asian crabs are standard baits. Drop straight down, keep your line tight, and wait for the telltale tap-tap before lifting firmly to drive the hook home but not ripping out of the rocks.
Through winter, action slows but ling, winter flounder, and occasional cod show on deeper pieces accessed by Brooklyn’s fleet of party boats. In all seasons, success in Brooklyn comes from reading current, matching weight to conditions, and staying mobile: hop between piers, jetty corners, and channel edges until you connect with fish.

Wharf's or Jetties are good places to wet a line and meet other fishermen. They often produce a fresh feed of fish and are also great to catch bait fish. As they are often well lit, they also provide a good opportunity for night fishing. There are 3 wharf(s) in this area.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 7 beaches and bays in this area.

Harbours and Marinas can often times be productive fishing spots for land based fishing as their sheltered environment attracts a wide variety of bait fish. Similar to river mouths, harbour entrances are also great places to fish as lots of fish will move in and out with the rising and falling tides. There are 9 main harbours in this area.
