Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Ithaca
Fishing in Ithaca, NY revolves around Cayuga Lake’s southern end and its tributaries, giving shore, boat, and kayak anglers a wide range of options. The deep main lake supports cold-water species like lake trout and landlocked salmon, while nearshore weedbeds and creek mouths hold bass, pike, panfish, and carp. Access is concentrated around Stewart Park, Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, and several small creek pull-offs close to town.
Seasonal patterns drive most success in Ithaca. In late winter and early spring, trout and salmon push into the southern shallows and along the east and west shorelines, chasing smelt and alewives. This is prime time for flatline trolling stickbaits and small spoons in 10–40 feet of water or casting from shore with minnow-imitating plugs at dawn. As water warms in late spring, lake trout drop deeper along the main-lake basin, becoming a vertical jigging and downrigger game. Summer pushes most cold-water fish into 80–150+ feet; focus on the drop-offs just north of Ithaca where the basin quickly deepens.
Warm-water species peak from late spring through early fall. Smallmouth bass stack along rocky points, riprap, and creek mouths, while largemouth bass favor weedy marinas, docks, and shallow coves near Ithaca. Early and late in the day, work topwaters and jerkbaits over 4–12 feet; as the sun climbs, switch to drop-shot rigs, tube jigs, and wacky-rigged worms fished around edges of rock and weeds. Pike and pickerel roam the same zones—especially slightly cooler, weed-fringed flats—where in-line spinners, spinnerbaits, and suspending jerkbaits produce strikes.
Tributary and shore opportunities are a major asset around Ithaca. Fall Creek and Six Mile Creek offer trout, smallmouth bass, and seasonal runs of lake fish. In cooler months, target deeper pools and seams with small jigs, spinners, and minnow-style plugs. During warmer periods, downsized soft plastics and small crankbaits worked through riffles and pocket water are effective. Shore anglers on Cayuga’s south end can find consistent action for perch, sunfish, rock bass, and bullhead using nightcrawlers or fathead minnows under slip bobbers near park piers and riprap.
Effective techniques on Cayuga Lake near Ithaca include trolling, vertical jigging, and precise structure casting. For trout and salmon, run small spoons, stickbaits, and flashers with flies off downriggers or lead core line, adjusting depth to match bait marks on sonar. When fish are concentrated, switch to vertical jigging with 1–2 ounce blade baits, jigging spoons, or white paddle-tail plastics directly beneath the boat. For bass, use finesse presentations—Ned rigs, drop-shots, and tubes—on 6–8 lb fluorocarbon to coax pressured fish, especially around clear-water rock and gravel.
Practical tips for Ithaca fishing: wind direction often dictates the bite; a light chop on points and shorelines usually improves action for bass and salmonids. Watch for surface bait dimpling at first light—often smelt or alewives pushed shallow—and be ready with small swimbaits or spoons. In high sun and flat water, scale down line, lures, and hardware. Kayaks and small boats are ideal for quietly covering the southern basin, while shore anglers can do well by staying mobile, rotating between park access, creek mouths, and bridge crossings until they locate active fish.
