Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Sanford
Fishing in Sanford, FL centers on the St. Johns River and Lake Monroe, a big, shallow lake right off downtown with direct river access. This area is classic Central Florida water: tannic river channels, eelgrass and hydrilla beds, lily pads, shell bars, and backwater sloughs that hold fish all year. Whether you launch at the Sanford Riverwalk, Monroe Harbour, or nearby ramps, you’re minutes from productive bass and crappie grounds.
Seasonal patterns drive most success. From late December through March, largemouth bass push into protected coves, canals, and shallow grass on Lake Monroe and adjacent creeks to spawn. Look for 2–6 feet of water with firm bottom and light vegetation. In spring, early and late in the day, work weightless soft-plastic jerkbaits, floating worms, and topwater prop baits along the edges of pads and reeds. As temperatures rise into summer, bass slide to deeper river bends, main-lake drops, and offshore grass edges; Texas-rigged worms, Carolina rigs, and deep-diving crankbaits take more fish.
Crappie (locally called specks) peak from late fall through early spring. On Lake Monroe, target open-water schools over 6–12 feet with slowly trolled (spider-rigged) minnows and small jigs. In the river, key on deeper holes near bends, bridge pilings, and old barge canals. Subtle color changes in jigs—chartreuse/white, monkey milk, or natural shad patterns—can make a big difference in the clear, tannin-stained water.
Through the warmer months, bluegill and shellcracker become prime targets around Sanford. Focus on canal mouths, shoreline grass, and lily pad fields with crickets, red worms, or small jigs under a float. Shellcracker often relate to sandy patches and mussel beds in 3–6 feet of water; slowly drag a worm along bottom instead of suspending it. Catfish action is consistent year-round on the St. Johns River—use cut bait, chicken liver, or nightcrawlers on simple slip-sinker rigs near channel edges, log jams, and bridge pilings.
Habitat and boat positioning are critical on this mostly shallow system. On Lake Monroe, idle with electronics to locate subtle drops, shell bars, or holes 1–3 feet deeper than surrounding flats—these often stack with bass and schooling sunshine/striped bass. In the river, pay attention to current seams where flowing water meets slack eddies behind points, docks, and cypress knees. Anchoring or spot-locking just upstream and casting baits back into the seam is a reliable tactic.
Key techniques for Sanford waters:
- Topwater for bass: At first light and dusk, walk-the-dog plugs and prop baits worked along grass lines and pads draw explosive strikes, especially before cold fronts.
- Flipping vegetation: Once the sun is high, flip soft plastics into thick pads, reeds, and emergent grass with a heavy weight to reach buried fish.
- Slow-trolling specks: Maintain a steady slow speed and stagger rod lengths to cover different depths; follow subtle depth contours on Monroe.
- Live bait in current: For stripers, sunshine bass, and catfish, drift or float live shiners or shad along channel edges and current breaks in the St. Johns.
Wind direction matters on Lake Monroe; a strong wind can muddy one side and push bait to the opposite shore. In tougher conditions, downsize line, use more natural colors, and fish the clearer, wind-protected pockets. With its mix of lake and river habitat, Sanford rewards anglers who stay mobile, read current and wind, and adjust tactics to the season.
