Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 11:1 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next New Moon in ~16 days on 9th November
Full Moon is generally a productive time for fishing - especially night fishing. Bright nights mean that many predators feed more actively during the night. During full moon the gravitational pull is in line with the gravitational pull of the sun, affecting all wildlife and increasing feeding behaviour.
  • Distance to earth:
    380,340 km
    Proximity:
    59.5 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Statesville

Statesville, NC fishing revolves around nearby Lake Norman to the south, Lake Hickory and Lookout Shoals Lake to the northwest, and multiple Catawba River access points. These lakes are classic Piedmont reservoirs with rocky points, red clay banks, long creek arms, boat docks, submerged brush, and deep channels that hold fish year-round. Within 30–40 minutes, anglers can switch between clear, heavily developed impoundments and more riverine water with current and stain.

Seasonal patterns drive success. In late winter and early spring, focus on pre-spawn bass and crappie staging on channel swings, secondary points, and docks near the backs of creeks. Jerkbaits, Alabama rigs, and finesse jigs are prime for Lake Norman and Hickory spots and largemouth, while crappie stack on brush piles and bridge pilings and fall for minnows or 1/16–1/32 oz tube jigs. By April and May, bass slide shallow to spawn along protected pockets, riprap, and dock walkways; weightless soft stickbaits, Texas-rigged creatures, and small swimbaits fished slowly produce consistent bites.

As summer heat settles over the Statesville area, bass, stripers, and catfish shift deeper. On Lake Norman and Lake Hickory, work offshore humps, long points, and main-lake ledges in 15–30 feet with deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, drop-shots, and football jigs. Early and late, throw topwater walking baits or buzzbaits over shoals and around dock corners for aggressive spotted bass. Striped and hybrid bass often school over main-lake points and river-channel bends; watching electronics for bait balls and using downlines or freelined live shad is highly productive. Channel and blue catfish relate to ledges and flats near the river channel and respond well to cut shad, bream heads, or chicken-based baits on slip-sinker rigs.

Fall brings some of the best multi-species fishing near Statesville. Cooling water pushes baitfish into the creeks, and bass, stripers, and white bass follow. Cover water with medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and small swimbaits in the mid to backs of creeks on Norman, Hickory, and Lookout Shoals. Watch for schooling activity on calm mornings; having a topwater plug and a small fluke or spoon ready pays off when fish push bait to the surface. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush and docks in 10–18 feet; vertical jigging on sonar-marked piles is the most efficient way to stack numbers.

Winter fishing around Statesville focuses on deep structure and slow presentations. On clear lakes like Norman, spotted bass suspend with bait over creek channels; use a Damiki rig, underspin, or blade bait beneath bait balls. Crappie consolidate along deeper bridges and standing timber, readily eating small minnows fished just above the school. Catfish remain catchable on channel edges with hearty cut bait, especially during warming trends ahead of cold fronts.

For Statesville anglers on foot, target public access points, bridges, and park areas on nearby lakes and the Catawba River. Look for bank areas with visible current seams, riprap, or dock clusters. Downsized tackle—6–8 lb line, 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads, and small soft plastics or live baits—consistently produces panfish and bass, while heavier bottom rigs with cut bait handle catfish. Leveraging weather fronts, low-light periods, and electronics where available will help you stay on top of fish in this highly pressured but consistently productive North Carolina fishery.
