Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:45 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Fargo

Fargo fishing revolves around the Red River of the North and a ring of prairie lakes and reservoirs in both North Dakota and western Minnesota. The Red marks the city’s eastern edge and provides current-driven fishing for channel cats, walleyes, and rough fish, while nearby natural lakes and impoundments add bass, pike, and panfish variety. This mix makes Fargo a practical base for anglers who want multiple species and year-round options.

From ice-out in early spring, focus on the Red River as water warms and levels stabilize. Walleyes and saugers push into shallow current breaks, inside bends, and below riffles. Cast jig-and-minnow combinations or soft plastics on 1/4–3/8 oz jigs, working slowly along the bottom. Subtle current seams behind bridge pilings and along riprap in town are high-percentage early-season spots. As water rises or muddies, upsize jigs and fish tighter to the bank or in back eddies where visibility is slightly better.

By late spring and through summer, channel catfish are the headliners. Look for deeper holes, outside bends, and the head and tailouts of mid-river holes between Fargo and points north and south. Cut sucker, goldeye, or prepared catfish baits on 4/0–7/0 circle hooks with 2–5 oz no-roll sinkers are the local standard. Anchor just upstream of a hole and fan-cast to different depths until you contact fish. Nighttime can be especially productive in town, when cats roam shallower edges and shoreline cover.

Summer also opens up lakes within an hour of Fargo—notably in the Detroit Lakes region and other Minnesota waters east of town, along with North Dakota reservoirs to the west. Here you’ll find walleyes relating to weedlines and mid-lake structure, plus strong pike, bass, and panfish populations. Trolling spinner rigs with crawlers or leeches along 10–18 ft weed edges is a dependable walleye tactic. For pike, cast spoons and spinnerbaits around emergent vegetation and shallow bays. Bass and panfish respond well to finesse plastics, small jigs, and slip bobbers set just above the weed tops.

As fall cools the region, walleyes on the Red River and nearby lakes feed aggressively. Concentrate on sharper breaks, confluences, and upstream edges of holes. Heavier jigs with minnows or slowly trolled crankbaits along the breakline can be excellent. On lakes, walleyes and perch slide deeper; use live-bait rigs or jigging spoons on humps and points in 20–30 ft. Pike often patrol the last remaining green weeds, making jerkbaits and large spoons key search tools.

In winter, Fargo-area anglers shift to ice fishing on regional lakes and reservoirs. Perch, bluegills, crappies, and walleyes are the main targets. Drill grids over basin transitions and weed edges, then hop between holes with small tungsten jigs tipped with waxworms or minnows. On walleye lakes, work jigging spoons or swimming baits near bottom during low light, and set deadsticks or tip-ups just off bottom for bonus fish. Winds can be severe on open prairie ice, so portable shelters and precise GPS mapping of structure are major tactical advantages.

Across seasons, success around Fargo comes from reading current, edges, and transitions. On the Red River, pay attention to seams, depth changes, and subtle breaks where feeding fish can sit out of the main flow. On lakes, treat weedlines, points, and mid-lake humps as primary waypoints and adjust depth with the season. Pack a mix of jigs, live bait, and a few proven crankbaits or spoons, and you can consistently connect with Fargo’s multi-species fishery in open water and on the ice.
