Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:59 hours of daylight. Fishing Overview Marion

Fishing in Marion, Indiana is anchored by two standout resources: the Mississinewa River flowing right through town and nearby Mississinewa Lake just northeast of the city. Together they provide year-round multi-species action for anglers who understand seasonal patterns, key structures, and the right presentations for these eastern-Indiana waters.

Spring is prime time around Marion. As water temps creep into the 50s, crappie push shallow in coves, backwaters, and flooded brush on Mississinewa Lake. Target them with 1/32–1/16 oz tube jigs, marabou jigs, or small minnows under a fixed float set 2–4 feet deep. Focus on any warmed, stained water and freshly flooded cover. On the Mississinewa River, walleye and saugeye move along current seams and below riffles; 1/4 oz jigheads tipped with plastics or live minnows excel in slower pockets behind rocks and bends.

As spring progresses, bass fishing takes off on both the river and the lake. Look for largemouth bass in shallow, protected spawning pockets with gravel or firm bottom. Spinnerbaits, square-bill crankbaits, and Texas-rigged soft plastics worked around laydowns and flooded brush consistently produce. In the river stretches close to Marion, smallmouth gravitate to chunk rock, bridge pilings, and current breaks; 3–4 inch tubes, finesse jigs, and Ned rigs are top producers when fished slowly along the bottom.

Summer patterns center on early and late in the day. On Mississinewa Lake, bass and white bass chase shad on points, humps, and channel swings. Topwaters at dawn — walking baits, poppers, and small buzzbaits — can be outstanding on calm mornings, while deep-running crankbaits and Carolina rigs take over once the sun gets higher. Bluegill and redear sunfish stack up along weed edges, submerged brush, and riprap; use small pieces of worm or tiny jigs under a float, keeping your offering just above the depth where you mark fish on electronics.

For catfish around Marion, focus on deeper river holes, outside bends, and the base of drop-offs in Mississinewa Lake. Channel catfish respond well to cut shad, chicken liver, or commercial stink baits fished on simple slip-sinker rigs. Fish at dusk into the night, positioning baits near current edges or along the base of rock and timber. Flatheads prefer live bait — bluegill or creek chubs — presented tight to heavy cover such as logjams or big rock piles.

Fall brings cooling water that concentrates baitfish and triggers some of the best multi-species action of the year. Bass move back shallow along rocky banks and secondary points; lipless crankbaits, medium-diving shad-pattern cranks, and compact jigs shine. White bass and hybrid striped bass school and push bait to the surface on Mississinewa Lake, especially on overcast, breezy days — keep a small spoons, in-line spinners, or 2–3 inch swimbaits ready to cast into surface activity.

During winter, focus on the deepest pools in the Mississinewa River and the main-lake basin on Mississinewa Lake where fish group tightly. Slow, vertical approaches work best: jigging spoons, blade baits, and small hair jigs hopped near bottom will tempt cold-water walleye, crappie, and the occasional bass. Even without ice, patient anglers who move slowly and work classic wintering holes can score consistently.

Access around Marion is excellent for bank anglers and small craft. Work public access points along the Mississinewa River, targeting bends, bridge areas, and obvious current breaks. A small jon boat, kayak, or canoe lets you reach less-pressured stretches. On Mississinewa Lake, use detailed contour maps and electronics to locate main-lake points, creek channels, and submerged timber, then adjust depth, lure size, and speed until you match the day’s mood.
