Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 12:46 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Ardmore

Ardmore, Oklahoma sits in the heart of some of the most diverse freshwater fishing in southern Oklahoma, anchored by Lake Murray and supported by Lake Ardmore and numerous small public lakes and ponds. Clear to moderately stained water, abundant rock and timber, and a long growing season create ideal conditions for bass, crappie, and catfish, with year-round action if you adjust to seasonal patterns.

Spring is prime time around Ardmore. As water temperatures climb into the 50s and low 60s, largemouth bass move shallow along gravel pockets, flooded brush, and protected coves on Lake Murray and smaller local lakes. Spinnerbaits, lipless crankbaits, and Texas-rigged creature baits excel when bass first push up, while weightless soft plastics and wacky-rigged worms shine around spawning flats. Crappie stack on submerged brush and riprap shorelines; 1/16–1/32 oz jigs under a fixed or slip float, pitched tight to cover, are consistent producers. Rising water in roadside ponds and small reservoirs also sparks excellent bluegill and redear action on worms and small jigs.

By summer, clear-water tactics dominate on Lake Murray. Bass retreat to main-lake points, humps, and offshore brush piles, especially where rock transitions or submerged timber add extra ambush cover. At first and last light, walk-the-dog topwaters and buzzbaits draw aggressive strikes over grass edges and shallow rock. As the sun gets high, switch to deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and drop-shots fished along ledges in 15–25 feet. Night fishing is highly productive: slow-roll big worms or jigs along bluff walls and lighted docks for both largemouth and spotted bass. Catfish bite steadily on cut shad, stink baits, and punch baits fished around windblown points and channel edges.

Fall brings a strong baitfish migration into creeks and pockets, concentrating bass and white bass. Look for schooling activity on Lake Murray’s mid-lake flats and creek mouths; chrome spoons, small swimbaits, and shad-pattern crankbaits match the hatch. Cover water quickly until you locate bait on your electronics, then work the area thoroughly. Crappie slide back to mid-depth structure: bridge pilings, brush piles in 10–18 feet, and deeper docks. Vertical jigging with small plastics or minnows is especially effective when fish are holding tight to cover.

Winter fishing around Ardmore is more methodical but rewarding. Bass and crappie group tightly on deeper rock, timber, and channel swings. Slow presentations are key: jigging spoons, blade baits, and small finesse jigs hopped just off the bottom catch both bass and bonus freshwater drum. Crappie prefer subtle movements, so downsize line and use natural colors in the region’s typically clear winter water. Catfish remain a dependable target by focusing on deeper holes near river and creek confluences, drifting or anchoring with fresh cut bait.

Across all seasons, success in Ardmore hinges on reading the lakes’ structure and clarity. On clear-water bodies like Lake Murray, lean on natural colors, lighter line, and long casts. On smaller, more stained lakes and ponds, darker silhouettes and vibration-heavy baits perform better. Spend time studying main-lake points, submerged roadbeds, and brush piles on maps and electronics; these spots consistently reload with fish. With its blend of big-water opportunities and easily accessed small lakes, Ardmore offers a versatile and productive freshwater fishery for anglers who adapt to its seasonal shifts.
