Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:28 hours of daylight. Fishing Overview Norman

Norman, Oklahoma anglers focus mainly on Lake Thunderbird, the South Canadian River, and numerous city lakes and ponds that hold healthy populations of bass, crappie, catfish, and sunfish. The area’s shallow, stained water and plentiful wood cover make power fishing and live-bait presentations especially productive. Knowing how fishing shifts with the seasons is key to staying on fish around Norman.

Spring is prime time on Lake Thunderbird and nearby ponds for largemouth bass and crappie. As water temps climb into the mid‑50s and 60s, bass push into coves, flooded buckbrush, and shallow flats. Target them with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and square-bill crankbaits when it’s windy, switching to Texas-rigged creature baits and wacky worms when it’s calm. Crappie concentrate around brush piles, standing timber, and riprap; 1/16–1/8 oz marabou or soft-plastic jigs in chartreuse, white, and monkey milk fished under a slip float catch numbers during the spawn. Look for the warmest, slightly stained water in the backs of creeks after a couple of mild days.

By summer, Norman’s waters heat up and fish slide deeper or relate to shade and current. On Lake Thunderbird, early and late are best for bass—work topwaters like walking baits and buzzbaits along main-lake points, riprap, and submerged roadbeds at first light. As the sun rises, switch to Carolina rigs, deep-diving crankbaits, or shaky heads on offshore humps and point drops. Night fishing can be excellent for both bass and catfish; use black or dark-purple soft plastics and slow-roll spinnerbaits for bass, while anchoring near channel edges and humps with cut shad, chicken liver, or punch bait for channel and blue catfish. In small Norman ponds, focus on aerators, inflow pipes, and any shade—simple slip-float rigs with worms or small jigs take bluegill and bonus bass.

During fall, cooling water pushes baitfish shallow and triggers some of the best multi-species fishing of the year. Bass and white bass chase shad on wind-blown banks and main-lake flats; watch for surface busts and work lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits, and compact spinnerbaits through active schools. Crappie slide back to mid-depth brush and docks; vertical jigging directly over cover with small plastics or minnows excels. Catfish remain active—drift-fishing cut shad along channel edges in 10–20 feet of water is a consistent pattern on Thunderbird.

In winter, Norman area lakes get clearer and fish concentrate tightly. Crappie stack on deeper brush, bridge pilings, and channel swings; downscan and side imaging help you locate them, then present small jigs or minnows just above the school. Bass respond well to slow presentations—jig-and-craw combos, finesse worms on shaky heads, and metal blade baits yo-yoed off the bottom. On milder days, riprap banks warmed by the sun can draw both bass and sunfish.

Tactically, success around Norman comes from matching your approach to the habitat. Focus on timber, brush piles, and rocky structure in Lake Thunderbird; shallow vegetated edges in city ponds; and current breaks, eddies, and sandbar holes in the Canadian River. Stained water favors noisy, high-profile lures—spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and rattling crankbaits—while live bait like minnows, cut shad, and nightcrawlers consistently produce for crappie, catfish, and sunfish across the Norman area.
