Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:10 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Medford

Fishing around Medford, Oregon centers on the Rogue River system and a network of productive lakes and reservoirs that fish well 12 months a year. Anglers can shift tactics season by season, targeting trout, steelhead, salmon, bass, and panfish within 30–60 minutes of town.

Seasonal patterns drive most fishing decisions. Late winter into early spring is prime time for Rogue River winter steelhead, with fish pushing into the upper river and tributaries. As flows stabilize and water clears, side-drifting yarn and eggs, drifting soft beads under floats, or swinging small spoons and spinners produces well from bank access points near Gold Hill and Shady Cove. Spring also brings hatchery rainbow trout plants to nearby lakes like Lost Creek (William L. Jess Dam), Applegate Lake, and small waters such as Agate Lake, creating easy opportunities for shore anglers and families.

By early summer, focus shifts to warmwater species and trout in the reservoirs. Smallmouth bass in the upper Rogue and in Lost Creek and Applegate respond to tube jigs, Ned rigs, and small craw-pattern plastics hopped along rocky structure. Largemouth bass frequent weedy coves and wood at Emigrant Lake and Howard Prairie; low-light topwater with walking baits or poppers is productive, followed by Texas-rigged worms and jigs once the sun is up. Summer trout fishing typically moves deeper, so trolling behind a small boat or kayak with wedding ring spinners, small wobblers, or hoochies tipped with corn or worm sections is a consistent tactic, especially for kokanee in Lost Creek and Applegate.

Fall in the Medford area is a mixed bag in the best way. Fall Chinook salmon enter the Rogue, and anglers back-bounce cured eggs, back-troll plugs such as Mag Lips and K15–K16 Kwikfish, or cast spoons in travel lanes and deeper runs. At the same time, cooling water re-energizes trout and bass in the lakes. Work wind-blown banks for actively feeding trout, concentrating on points and inflow areas. Bass key on remaining weed edges and rocky transitions; crankbaits and spinnerbaits that cover water quickly help you locate fish, then you can slow down with jigs or plastics.

Winter’s colder weather doesn’t shut things down. The upper Rogue near Medford remains a solid winter steelhead option on fishable-flow days, while many lakes still give up trout to anglers fishing power bait, worms, or salmon eggs off the bottom from shore. Slow presentations rule: fish jigs or spoons with long pauses, and troll at minimal speeds if you’re in a boat.

Medford anglers should match tactics to habitat. In the Rogue River, target seams, tailouts, and boulder-studded runs with drift rigs, bobber-dogging setups, or swung flies and hardware. In the lakes, focus on:

  • Points and drop-offs for trout and kokanee
  • Rocky banks and mid-lake humps for smallmouth bass
  • Weedlines, timber, and coves for largemouth and panfish

Light line (4–8 lb test) and fluorocarbon leaders excel for trout and kokanee, while 8–15 lb mainline covers most bass and steelhead work. Downsizing lures in clear water and bumping them off bottom or structure often converts followers into biters. With its diverse waters and close proximity to town, Medford offers a highly tactical, year-round fishing playground for anglers willing to adapt to changing conditions.
