Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:53 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

For fishing, stronger tides are often favourable as they cause stronger currents and more motion on the sea bed. The above tidal coefficients give us an indication of how strong the tides are compared to their average. A value over 90 indicates very strong tides, known as spring tides. A low value indicates weak tides, known as neap tides. The tidal coefficient can range from 20 to 120 with a mean value of 70. A higher number usually indicates better fishing.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Norristown

Norristown, PA fishing centers on the Schuylkill River, a broad, structure-rich waterway that supports strong populations of bass, catfish, shad, and panfish. Anglers work pool-and-riffle stretches, bridge pilings, riprap banks, and islands from shore, wading, kayaks, and small boats. Public access is plentiful around Norristown Farm Park, Riverfront and boat launches along the Schuylkill River Trail corridor, giving fishermen multiple angles on this productive urban river.

Seasonal patterns are driven by water temperature and river flow. In early spring, focus on slower, deeper wintering holes below dams, bridge abutments, and channel bends where smallmouth bass, walleye, and catfish stack up. Jigs tipped with soft plastics or minnows, slowly rolled along bottom, are reliable in the often-stained March and April flows. As temperatures climb into the 50s and 60s, smallmouth move to mid-depth rock flats and current seams; this is prime time for 3–4 inch tubes, compact crankbaits, and finesse swimbaits. Late April through May also brings American and hickory shad surging upriver; small shad darts and bright spoons cast into fast runs can produce fast action.

Summer fishing around Norristown is about current and shade. Smallmouth bass hold along rocky banks, eddies behind bridge pilings, and at the heads and tails of islands. Early and late in the day, work topwaters such as poppers and walking baits across shallow riffles and along riprap. Midday, downsize to Ned rigs, grubs, and small jigs fished tight to current breaks. Panfish and rock bass crowd around any hard cover—dock pilings, submerged timber, and riprap—where simple nightcrawler pieces under a float or small 1/32–1/16 oz jigs catch steady numbers.

Catfish are a major draw in Norristown’s stretch of the Schuylkill. Channel catfish are widespread, but many anglers specifically target heavyweight flathead cats after dark from late spring through early fall. Focus on deep outside bends, holes below dams, and the downstream sides of major structure transitions. Cut bait for channels and live or fresh-cut sunfish for flatheads, presented on heavy slip-sinker rigs, are standard. Anchor just above a hole and fan-cast baits across the current, giving each spot at least 30–45 minutes before moving.

In fall, cooling water re-concentrates fish in deeper pools and around pronounced current seams. Smallmouth bass feed aggressively on baitfish, making this the best time for moving baits—medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and 3–4 inch swimbaits ticking along rocky bottom. Walleye activity also increases at dawn, dusk, and after dark; slowly rolling jigs or crankbaits along the bottom of deep runs and channel edges can be very effective. Carp remain catchable all season in slower backwaters and along gradual banks; pack baits, sweet corn, or flavored dough fished on simple hair rigs or slip-sinkers produce well.

Habitat and tactical tips around Norristown are straightforward:

  • Target rock: ledges, boulder fields, and riprap edges are prime for smallmouth and rock bass.
  • Fish current breaks: seams behind pilings, islands, and wing walls funnel feeding game fish.
  • Adjust to river levels: higher, stained water pushes fish tight to banks and eddies; lower, clear flows call for lighter line, more natural colors, and longer casts.
  • For shore anglers, cover water: walk the Schuylkill River Trail and hit multiple current seams, inlets, and visible structure instead of camping on one spot.

With diverse species, solid shore access, and reliable seasonal patterns, the Norristown stretch of the Schuylkill River offers year-round opportunities for anglers who read the current, focus on structure, and match simple, proven presentations to the conditions.
