Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Aiken
Fishing in Aiken, South Carolina is built around the Savannah River corridor and the vast waters of Clarks Hill (Strom Thurmond) Lake just to the west, with additional opportunities in local ponds, small lakes, and public waters scattered across the county. The area is best known for reliable largemouth bass action, slab crappie, and consistent catfish and bream fishing that stay productive in every season.
Seasonal patterns revolve around water temperature more than the calendar. In late winter and early spring, prespawn largemouth bass stage on main-lake points, creek-channel bends, and the first secondary points in coves. Slow-rolled spinnerbaits, medium-diving crankbaits in shad or craw patterns, and Carolina-rigged soft plastics are key on Clarks Hill and larger ponds. As water moves into the upper 50s and 60s, bass and crappie push shallow; work the backs of creeks, flooded bushes, and shoreline cover with weightless stickbaits, floating worms, and small jigs for aggressive fish.
By summer, expect an early-and-late pattern. At Clarks Hill, bass and hybrid/striped bass feed on offshore bait over humps, channel edges, and long points. Deep-diving crankbaits, football jigs, and drop-shot rigs shine on bass holding in 15–25 feet. For stripers and hybrids, slow trolling live shad or herring over main-lake structure and along river-channel drops is a staple. Around Aiken’s ponds and smaller lakes, focus on shade: docks, overhanging trees, and any inflow pipe or creek. Topwater walking baits and buzzbaits at first light, then Texas-rigged worms and finesse jigs once the sun gets high, are reliable producers.
Fall brings one of the best bites of the year as baitfish move shallow and into creeks. Cover water quickly with squarebill crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and swim jigs around wood, riprap, and grass edges. Crappie stack up on brushpiles, bridge pilings, and standing timber; use small tube jigs or minnows vertically on tight clusters of fish you mark on electronics. Winter cools things down but doesn’t shut the fishing off—bass slide to deeper rock, bluff walls, and channel swings, where jigging spoons, blade baits, and shaky-head worms fished slowly can be very effective.
Habitat types around Aiken range from big-reservoir structure to intimate, bank-friendly waters. Clarks Hill Lake offers expansive main-lake flats, steep bluff banks, timber-filled creek arms, and classic points. Reading the wind is crucial here; wind-blown points and shorelines concentrate bait and predators. The Savannah River below the dam presents current seams, eddies, and deep holes that favor catfish, striped bass, and seasonal shad runs. Smaller municipal and farm ponds feature gently sloping banks, scattered brush, and emergent vegetation, which are ideal for bank anglers targeting bass, bluegill, and shellcracker.
Common techniques and tactical tips are straightforward but reward precision. For bass, keep a three-rod core: a medium spinnerbait or chatterbait for covering water, a Texas-rigged worm or creature bait for pitching to wood and docks, and a finesse setup (shaky head or wacky-rig) for pressured fish and clear water. Downsize your line and lures in clear conditions or on heavily fished small lakes to draw more bites. Crappie anglers do well spider-rigging or single-pole jigging over brush at varying depths until they dial in the strike zone.
Catfish are abundant in both the Savannah River and reservoir arms. Anchor above channel bends, outside bends of rivers, or at the heads of deep holes and present cut shad, bream chunks, or chicken-based baits on slip-sinker rigs. Night fishing in summer is especially productive on gently sloping points and flats near deep water. For panfish, ultra-light gear, small floats, and live crickets or red worms fished around grass edges, laydowns, and dock pilings will keep rods bending, especially during the late spring and early summer bedding periods.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
