Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:22 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Florence

Florence, Oregon fishing centers around the Siuslaw River, nearby coastal lakes, and quick access to the Pacific. This combination creates year-round opportunity, whether you prefer trolling for salmon, slip‑bobbering for trout, or working swimbaits in the surf. Seasonality is key: understanding when fish move through the Siuslaw estuary, when nearby lakes warm, and how ocean conditions shift will greatly improve your catch rates.

The Siuslaw River and estuary are the backbone of Florence fishing. Fall is prime time for Chinook and Coho salmon, with anglers trolling herring, spinners, or plugs from the river mouth up through Old Town Florence and beyond. At low light, back‑trolling or anchor fishing with plugs along channel edges can be deadly. On softer tides, work the deeper bends and travel lanes; on big tide swings, focus on inside seams and back eddies where salmon can rest.

Winter and early spring bring steelhead into the system. Side‑drifting small clusters of eggs, beads, or soft plastics along current breaks is effective in the mid to upper river reaches, while the lower river near Florence can produce when flows stabilize. Summer and early fall see good numbers of sea‑run cutthroat trout, which respond well to small spinners, spoons, and lightweight plugs cast tight to woody cover and grassy banks in the tidal sections.

Florence is surrounded by productive coastal lakes such as Siltcoos, Tahkenitch, Mercer, Munsel, and Woahink. These lakes are heavily stocked with rainbow trout from late winter through spring; focus on points near the boat ramps, drop‑offs adjacent to shallow flats, and inlets where cool water enters. Still‑fishing PowerBait off the bottom, slowly trolling small spinners, or working spoons along the first break line all catch fish. As water warms, early morning and evening become critical for trout, while mid‑day shines for warmwater species.

Largemouth bass and panfish thrive in weedy coves and timbered shorelines of Siltcoos, Tahkenitch, and Mercer. Pitch weightless plastics, frogs, or jigs into pockets in the vegetation. Bass often relate to submerged wood and reed edges—target shade lines and irregularities in the bank. Yellow perch and crappie suspend off points and along drop‑offs; a simple nightcrawler piece under a slip float or tiny jig tipped with bait will keep rods bent, especially in spring and early summer.

For saltwater fishing out of Florence, anglers work the North and South Jetties, beaches, and nearshore reefs. Surfperch are a standout from late winter through summer. Read the beach for troughs and cuts between sandbars, then cast 1–2 oz sinkers rigged with sand shrimp, mole crabs, or gulp‑style sandworms. Time your sessions around the last half of the incoming tide for the best action, and keep moving to locate active schools.

The river mouth and adjacent ocean structure harbor rockfish, lingcod, and greenling. Boat anglers target rocky pinnacles and reef lines with lead‑head jigs tipped with curly‑tail grubs, swimbaits, or bait strips. On the jetties, hop heavier jigs just off the bottom, keeping contact with the rocks but avoiding snags by lifting on contact. When ocean conditions allow, halibut and other offshore species can be reached from local charters based in Florence.

Across all Florence fisheries, success hinges on adjusting to tides, clarity, and weather. In the estuary, fish slower and deeper when water is off‑color, and speed up presentations as visibility improves. In lakes, downsize baits after heavy pressure and focus on wind‑blown banks where food concentrates. In the surf and along the jetties, prioritize safety and stable conditions, then methodically work structure and depth changes until you dial in where fish are holding.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes. We found 2 beaches and bays in this area.
