Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:34 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

Next Full Moon in ~15 days on 29th June
New Moon is generally a very productive time for fishing. Dark nights mean that many predators feed more actively during daylight hours. The combined gravity of sun and moon during New Moon days has a stronger effect on all water bodies, leads to increased food availabilty and hence better fishing.
  • Distance to earth:
    363,765 km
    Proximity:
    98.4 %
We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

Fishing Overview Brookings

Brookings, Oregon is a prime gateway to both ocean and river fishing on the Southern Oregon Coast. The Port of Brookings Harbor provides quick access to productive reefs, kelp beds, and nearshore structure, while the Chetco River and neighboring streams offer excellent runs of salmon, steelhead, and trout. With relatively mild weather and a protected harbor, anglers can often find fishable conditions here when other coastal ports are blown out.

Seasonally, spring out of Brookings is dominated by lingcod and rockfish on nearshore reefs, with fish holding tight to rocky breaks and pinnacles in 30–120 feet of water. Slow-trolling or drifting leadhead jigs with swimbaits, large grubs, or metal jigs close to the bottom is the staple approach. Keep your bait within a few feet of the rocks and be prepared to lose some gear; the best lingcod often come right out of heavy structure. Summer brings consistent bottomfish plus surfperch in the sandy pockets along Harris Beach and Sporthaven Beach. Casting 1–2 oz Carolina rigs tipped with sand shrimp, Gulp! sandworms, or small pieces of clam into the first and second troughs produces perch on moderate swells.

Salmon fishing near Brookings typically centers around trolling anchovies and herring behind flashers just outside the harbor and along contour lines where bait stacks up. Focus on temperature breaks and color changes on your chartplotter, and run your spreads staggered at different depths until you mark consistent arches on the sonar. In the Chetco River, fall Chinook and later winter steelhead are the main draws. Side-drifting soft beads, pegged corkies, or small clusters of roe on 8–12 lb leaders is effective in medium flows, while back-bouncing heavier lead and bait works well in deeper holes. Plugs such as Mag Lips and Kwikfish wrapped with sardine or tuna are deadly in long, traveling lanes.

Late summer into early fall, when ocean conditions stabilize and warm water pushes in, albacore tuna occasionally swing within range of Brookings. Anglers running 30–60 miles offshore target them by trolling small cedar plugs, clone-style jigs, and feathered trolling lures at 5–7 knots. Watch for bird activity, jumpers, and temperature breaks around 60–64°F, then switch to live-bait or run-and-gun casting once a school is located. Light fluorocarbon leaders and fast retrieves often trigger more strikes when fish get selective.

Brookings also offers year-round opportunities for bottom dwellers like sanddab, sole, and nearshore halibut on sandy flats adjacent to rocky structure. Drift-fishing baited two-hook rigs with strips of herring, squid, or sand shrimp along subtle humps and depressions is the key. On calm days, kayakers can work within a mile of the harbor, fishing jigging spoons and soft plastics along kelp edges for rockfish, lingcod, and kelp greenling. Inside the estuary and lower river, sea-run cutthroat respond well to small spinners, spoons, and size 4–6 streamers swung on light tackle along grassy banks and undercut edges.

Crabbing for Dungeness and red rock crab is a common add-on to fishing trips from Brookings. Drop pots or rings baited with fish carcasses or chicken near channel edges and harbor mouths and give them a solid soak while you target rockfish or salmon. By timing outings around workable ocean conditions, focusing on structure, current seams, and bait concentrations, anglers fishing out of Brookings can consistently put together productive days across seasons.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
