Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Gallatin
Gallatin, Tennessee fishing revolves around Old Hickory Lake and the Cumberland River, a fertile impoundment-river system known for quality bass, crappie, and catfish. The mix of main-river current, creek arms, shallow coves, marinas, and offshore structure gives anglers year-round opportunity with both power-fishing and finesse tactics.
Seasonal patterns are predictable on Old Hickory around Gallatin. In late winter and early spring, bass, crappie, and sauger stage on channel swings, bluff banks, and riprap near creek mouths. Jigs, compact crankbaits, and Alabama rigs shine for bass, while crappie fall for small tube jigs or minnows suspended just off brush and docks. As water warms into April–May, prespawn and spawning fish move shallow into pockets and protected coves; weightless soft plastics, spinnerbaits, and bladed jigs produce well around shoreline wood and emerging vegetation.
Summer patterns push many fish offshore. On hot days, target main-lake and river ledges, shell beds, and humps just off the river channel. Deep-diving crankbaits, Carolina rigs, and big spoons are staples for largemouth and spots. Schooling white bass and hybrids often bust shad on the surface near channel breaks and points at dawn and dusk; keep a chrome lipless crankbait or small topwater ready to fire into breaking fish. Night fishing is popular in summer for catfish and bass—slow-roll spinnerbaits and big worms along bluff walls and dock lights, and anchor on channel edges with cut shad or chicken liver for channel and blue catfish.
Fall sees baitfish flooding the creeks and backs of pockets around Gallatin. Power-fishing comes back into play with squarebill crankbaits, swim jigs, and chatterbaits around laydowns, riprap, and shallow rock. Crappie slide back onto mid-depth brush piles and standing timber; vertical jigging with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs or tight-lining minnows over brush in 8–15 feet is productive. Cooler water also sparks good action for sauger and walleye in the river below Old Hickory Dam; focus on current breaks, eddies, and gravel bars with jigs and live bait.
Key habitat types near Gallatin include the main Cumberland River channel, secondary creek arms, marinas, and abundant man-made cover. Channel swings that push tight to the bank, riprap around bridges and ramps, and isolated stumps on flats are prime bass spots. Brush piles—both natural and planted—are magnets for crappie and bluegill. On the river stretches, current seams, wing dikes, and deep bends hold catfish, drum, and sauger.
Tactical tips for Gallatin anglers: keep your presentations matched to water clarity and current. In the often-stained river water, use chartreuse, black, and bright shad patterns, and upsized blades or rattling baits to help fish locate your lure. On calmer, clearer main-lake areas, finesse worms, shaky heads, and small swimbaits get more bites, especially on pressured ledges and docks. Electronics are a big advantage on Old Hickory—idle ledges and channel edges to find bait and subtle shell or rock transitions, then work through them methodically from multiple angles.
Multi-species anglers should mix it up. While soaking cut bait on bottom for big blues and channels in deeper holes, keep a medium-action rod rigged with a jigging spoon or small swimbait to work vertically for white bass, hybrids, and drum marked on the graph. For panfish with kids, target shaded marinas, riprap, and gentle sloping banks with worms or crickets under a float. With attention to seasonal movements and current, the Gallatin stretch of Old Hickory Lake can produce consistent action and the occasional trophy.
