Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 15:2 hours of daylight. Fishing Overview Farmington

Farmington, New Mexico sits at the heart of one of the Southwest’s most productive fishing regions, anchored by the world-renowned San Juan River below Navajo Dam and ringed by fertile lakes and reservoirs. From technical tailwater trout to power-fishing for bass and trolling for walleye, anglers can match their tactics to the season and water type within a short drive of town.

The San Juan River tailwater is the crown jewel, flowing clear and cold year-round. Its "Quality Waters" section is famous for dense populations of wild rainbow and brown trout. Winter through early spring, focus on slow, deep runs and seams with tiny midges and larvae patterns fished under an indicator. Use 5X–6X tippet, long leaders, and micro split shot to keep flies ticking bottom. As water warms in late spring and summer, blue-winged olive and midge hatches intensify; sight-fishing with small emergers in skinny riffles and tailouts becomes a prime tactic. Terrestrials and attractor nymphs produce around weedbeds and structure in summer, and streamers stripped along undercut banks can move larger browns, especially on cloudy days.

Below the most pressured stretches, the San Juan’s lower river and tributaries offer more relaxed fishing with mixed trout and warmwater species. Here, larger nymphs, woolly buggers, and small streamers work well, and spinning anglers can score with inline spinners and small jerkbaits. Target current breaks, eddies, and the heads and tails of pools, making repeated fan casts from each position to cover water thoroughly.

Stillwater anglers around Farmington have multiple options. Navajo Lake, upstream of the tailwater, supports smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and trout. In spring, work shallow coves, rocky points, and flooded brush with suspending jerkbaits, soft-plastic swimbaits, and jigs. As summer progresses and fish push deeper, troll bottom-bouncers with crawler harnesses for walleye, and drag football jigs or drop-shots along main-lake points for smallmouths. Low-light periods are best for surface or near-surface presentations, especially topwater walking baits around rocky banks.

Closer to Farmington, local ponds and small reservoirs cater to family-friendly fishing for catfish, bass, and panfish. Early and late in the day, cast small spinners or 1/16–1/8 oz jigs tipped with soft plastics for bluegill and crappie along weed edges. For channel catfish, fish cut bait or prepared dough baits on slip-sinker rigs in deeper holes or near drop-offs, giving each spot 20–30 minutes before relocating. Carp, a common sight in slower, warmer waters, respond well to simple dough balls or corn on light tackle, and provide fast action when trout and bass are sluggish.

Throughout the Farmington area, seasonal patterns follow water temperature. Spring is prime for prespawn bass and aggressive trout, summer brings early-morning and evening bites with mid-day finesse approaches, fall offers strong streamer and reaction-bait fishing as fish feed heavily, and winter rewards patient anglers who slow down and fish deep. Match your tactics to each water—small, subtle presentations for the San Juan’s clear tailwater; larger, louder lures and mobile searching strategies on the area’s lakes—to consistently capitalize on Farmington’s broad fishing potential.
