Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Logan
Logan, Utah gives anglers quick access to a mix of freestone rivers, small mountain creeks, and productive reservoirs across Cache Valley. The Logan River, Blacksmith Fork River, and nearby waters like Hyrum Reservoir and Cutler Reservoir create a year-round fishery where trout and warmwater species can all be targeted within a short drive of town.
Seasonal patterns revolve around snowmelt and irrigation flows. From March through early June, the Logan and Blacksmith Fork see rising water and occasional stain; nymphs and streamers fished close to the bottom work best. Summer brings lower, clearer flows and more technical dry-fly and small-nymph fishing, especially in the canyon reaches. Fall is prime time for bigger brown trout with streamers and egg patterns, while winter rewards patient anglers using tiny midges and slow presentations in deeper runs.
The Logan River is a classic pocket-water freestone with wild browns, rainbows, and cutthroat. Focus on current seams, boulder gardens, and undercut banks. Dead-drifted small nymphs (mayfly, caddis, and midge patterns in sizes 16–22) under a light indicator or Euro-style tight-line setup consistently produce fish. In summer, carry attractor dries, terrestrials, and small caddis; drop a size 18–20 beadhead behind your dry to cover two depths at once. Early and late in the day, swing soft hackles or strip small streamers along the edges of faster runs to move larger fish.
The Blacksmith Fork River fishes similarly but often runs slightly clearer in runoff and has excellent canyon access. Target deeper bends, plunge pools, and shaded pockets. Long, fine leaders are important in low, clear water—think 9–12 feet with 5X–6X tippet for small dries and nymphs. In colder months, concentrate on the slowest, deepest slots and keep flies near the bottom with small tungsten patterns and minimal split shot.
Stillwaters around Logan add variety. Hyrum Reservoir and similar lakes provide trout, perch, and panfish. In spring and fall, trout work the shorelines—cast spoons, spinners, or suspending jigs from shore, or slow-troll small crankbaits and worm harnesses from a boat or kayak. As water warms, shift deeper; vertical jigging or slip-bobber rigs tipped with nightcrawlers or soft plastics around points and drop-offs is highly effective.
Cutler Reservoir and connected backwaters are known for warmwater species like smallmouth, largemouth, catfish, and carp. Focus on submerged wood, weedlines, and channel edges. For bass, throw small jigs, tubes, and finesse worms along rocky structure and riprap. Catfish respond well to cut bait or prepared stink baits fished on simple bottom rigs near channel bends and current breaks. Sight-fishing for carp with small nymphs or soft-plastic crayfish can be surprisingly technical and rewarding when the water is clear and calm.
Across the Logan area, travel light, move frequently, and match your approach to water clarity and temperature. Downsizing tackle, using stealthy approaches, and carefully reading current seams are the keys to turning Logan’s heavily pressured but richly productive waters into consistent fishing success.
