Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 14:58 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Vernal

Vernal, Utah is a launchpad to some of the West’s most versatile freshwater fisheries, anchored by the famous Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam and a network of reservoirs like Steinaker, Red Fleet, and Starvation. Anglers can target trophy trout, muskies, bass, and panfish within an hour’s drive, making Vernal a year-round fishing base.

Seasonal patterns revolve around water temperature and flows. Late winter into early spring, the Green River’s A and B sections fish exceptionally well for brown and rainbow trout as midges and small mayflies dominate; nymphing and tiny dries shine in low, clear flows. As water warms in late spring and early summer, terrestrials and larger attractor nymphs produce, and streamer fishing for aggressive browns picks up, especially on cloudy days. Summer brings prime stillwater action: dawn and dusk are best on Steinaker, Red Fleet, and Starvation for smallmouth bass, walleye, and panfish, with trout active deeper. Fall is peak time for big browns on the Green and hefty lake trout and tiger muskie in area reservoirs. Winter ice fishing can be excellent on Steinaker and Starvation for perch, trout, and walleye when safe ice forms.

Habitat types near Vernal are varied. The Green River offers classic tailwater structure: long riffles, deep emerald pools, defined seams, and undercut banks. Focus on current breaks, shelves, and eddies where trout stack to feed. Reservoirs such as Steinaker and Red Fleet feature rocky points, flooded timber, and drop-offs; smallmouth bass and walleye relate to rock and structure, while rainbows cruise along shorelines and inlets. Smaller lakes and high-country streams in the Uinta Basin hold brook, cutthroat, and rainbow trout around undercut banks, beaver ponds, and pocket water.

Common techniques on the Green River include nymph rigs with small mayfly and midge patterns under an indicator, dry–dropper setups, and streamers stripped along banks and through soft edges. Spin anglers do well with small spoons, in-line spinners, and minnow-imitating plugs worked quartering downstream. On reservoirs, vertical jigging with soft plastics or spoons near points and humps is effective for walleye and perch, while crankbaits, tube jigs, and finesse plastics catch smallmouth bass around rocks and transitions. Trolling small crankbaits or spinners behind the boat produces rainbows and kokanee, especially in low-light periods.

Tactical tips for Vernal-area fishing center on stealth, timing, and precise presentations. On the Green, fish early or late to avoid crowds and bright sun; use long leaders and lighter tippet in clear water, and adjust weight and depth frequently to keep nymphs ticking the bottom. When streamer fishing, vary retrieve speed and angle until you find the cadence browns want. On lakes, key on wind-blown shorelines and points that concentrate baitfish, and use electronics to locate depth changes and suspended schools. In summer, fish lower light windows and go deeper as the sun climbs, using darker, more natural colors in clear water and brighter patterns when murky or overcast. By matching your tactics to the specific water and season, the Vernal region can produce consistent action and a real shot at trophy-class fish.
