Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Front Royal
Front Royal, Virginia sits at the heart of some of the best freshwater fishing in the Mid-Atlantic, anchored by the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River and framed by cool mountain trout streams rolling off Shenandoah National Park. The mix of warmwater river, impoundments, and high-country creeks gives anglers year-round options that shift predictably with the seasons.
From April through early June, the focus is the smallmouth bass bite on the Shenandoah. As water temperatures climb into the 50s and low 60s, target gravel bars, current seams, and chunk-rock banks from access points like Front Royal’s public boat ramps and bridges. Drift or wade and cast 3–4 inch soft-plastic grubs, tubes, and ned-style baits in green pumpkin and smoke hues. In slightly stained water, switch to small squarebill crankbaits and spinnerbaits slow-rolled just above the rock. Early and late in the day, walk-the-dog topwaters and poppers produce explosive strikes on flats with scattered boulders.
Summer on the Shenandoah is about low, clear water and precise presentations. Fish concentrate around deeper ledges, mid-river boulders, and the heads and tails of pools. Scale down to light line, 1/8 oz jigheads, and finesse worms. Long casts and a natural drift are critical; let plastics tumble with the current rather than overworking them. Fly anglers do well with size 4–8 streamers, poppers, and terrestrials, especially during morning and evening when shadows soften the surface.
Catfish action is consistent from late spring through early fall, with channel and flathead catfish holding in deep holes, outside bends, and the base of ledges. After dark, anchor just upstream of a hole and fan-cast cut bait or live sunfish on slip-sinker rigs. Keep rigs simple and hooks sharp; Shenandoah cats often bite light before committing. Use a headlamp with red mode and pre-tied leaders to maximize time with baits in the water.
Fall brings another peak for smallmouth in the Front Royal area as water cools and fish feed heavily. Work moving baits—medium-diving crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits—along rocky banks and through runs with 3–6 feet of depth. As temperatures continue to drop, slow down with jig-and-craw combinations and suspending jerkbaits paused for several seconds between twitches. This is also a good time to encounter walleye and the occasional muskie in deeper runs and bends.
For trout, look to the mountain streams west and south of Front Royal. Brook, rainbow, and brown trout inhabit cold, clear creeks with pocket water and plunge pools. Position yourself low and approach from downstream; these fish are extremely wary in tight, shallow water. Spin anglers should carry 1/16–1/8 oz inline spinners and small minnow plugs, while fly fishers do best with attractor dries, small nymphs, and woolly buggers in the seams and tailouts.
Year-round, Front Royal’s productivity comes from reading water and matching tactics to specific habitats: riffle edges and boulder fields for aggressive smallmouth, deep holes and slow outside bends for catfish and walleye, and shaded pocket water for trout. Cover water efficiently, switch lures when you locate active fish, and use the town’s convenient river access points as launch pads to sample the Shenandoah’s varied stretches in every season.
