Fishing Overview Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon fishing is built around the Skagit River and its network of sloughs, plus quick access to Skagit Bay and the San Juan gateway. Seasonal timing matters more than anything here. Late winter into early spring, anglers focus on steelhead and resident trout in the main Skagit and tributaries. Look for softer seams below riffles, inside bends, and behind mid‑river boulders where fish conserve energy. Drift presentations with jigs, beads, or bait under a float are especially effective in the slightly colored flows common this time of year.

Spring also wakes up the warmwater bite in local ponds and small lakes scattered through the valley. As water temps push into the 50s, largemouth bass slide shallow to stage on secondary points, reed edges, and submerged wood. Work slow‑moving soft plastics, weightless stickbaits, or small jigs around visible cover. Panfish like bluegill, pumpkinseed, and crappie stack in the same protected coves, and tiny jigs or pieces of worm under a float will quickly locate schools.

Summer on the Skagit brings a mix of trout, sea‑run cutthroat, and in-season salmon runs. Early and late in the day, cast small spinners, spoons, or streamer flies across current seams and swing them through traveling lanes. Focus on deeper slots, the heads and tails of islands, and shade lines along the bank. As flows drop and clear, scale down to lighter leaders and smaller, natural‑colored presentations. Up in the foothill lakes, rainbow and cutthroat trout feed higher in the water column; trolling small spoons or wedding‑ring style spinners behind a dodger is a consistent tactic.

Mount Vernon’s location near Skagit Bay also opens strong saltwater options. In summer, salmon and bottomfish are within reach of small boats and kayaks on good weather windows. Work tidal rip lines, points, and contour breaks where bait stacks up. Trolling bait or hoochies behind flashers is the standard approach for salmon; for lingcod and rockfish, drop jigs and soft plastics tight to rocky structure and sharp drop‑offs. Along shorelines and public beaches, surfperch, flounder, and smaller bottomfish can be caught casting small metal spoons, sandworm‑style plastics, or baited rigs into troughs and current edges.

Fall is prime time on the Skagit system. Coho and, in odd years, pink salmon move into the river in big numbers. Coho respond well to twitching jigs in slow side channels and back eddies; pinks favor smaller spoons and jigs worked with a steady retrieve through travel lanes. Watch for traveling fish rolling on the surface and position just above them. This is also a great window for fat sea‑run cutthroat keying on salmon eggs and fry; small minnow‑imitating plugs or streamers in the soft edges below spawning areas are reliable producers.

Throughout the year, rotating between the Skagit mainstem, its backwaters, nearby lakes, and the salt gives Mount Vernon anglers nearly continuous opportunity. Pay attention to river levels, tides, and water clarity, and match your tactics—trolling, drifting, casting, or jigging—to the specific habitat you’re fishing, and you can stay on fish in every season.
