Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Clarksburg
Fishing around Clarksburg, WV centers on a mix of small rivers, public lakes, and stocked trout streams that give local anglers year-round options. The West Fork River and nearby Stonewall Jackson Lake are key fisheries, backed up by small waters and access to productive regional lakes within a short drive. Whether you prefer bass, crappie, catfish, or trout, there is always something in season close to town.
Seasonal patterns drive success around Clarksburg. In early spring, water levels rise and water temps remain cool, pushing bass, crappie, and walleye shallow along flooded brush, riprap, and creek inlets. This is prime time for jerkbaits, small crankbaits, and 1/16–1/8 oz crappie jigs fished around woody cover. Trout stocking in local streams and tailwaters is typically heaviest from late winter through spring; downsized inline spinners, 1/32–1/16 oz marabou jigs, and live bait under small floats are very productive.
By late spring and summer, vegetation thickens and current moderates in the West Fork River and feeder creeks. Largemouth bass relate heavily to laydowns, undercut banks, and any shade lines, while smallmouth and spots hold closer to rock and current seams. Soft plastic worms, craws, and creature baits Texas-rigged or on a 3/16–1/4 oz jig head will cover most situations. Early and late in the day, topwater walkers, poppers, and buzzbaits draw aggressive strikes along riprap, points, and over submerged wood.
Catfish opportunities around Clarksburg peak from late spring through early fall. Channel cats favor deeper outside bends in the river, eddies below small dams, and the deeper ends of lake coves. Cut shad, chicken liver, and prepared stink baits on slip-sinker rigs with 1/0–3/0 circle hooks are the standard approach. Flathead catfish lean toward live bait—sunfish or creek chubs—fished tight to heavy timber and rock at night. Use heavy gear, abrasion-resistant leaders, and be prepared to pull fish away from cover quickly.
In summer, panfish and crappie suspend around bridge pilings, standing timber, and docks on area lakes. Small tube jigs, feather jigs, or minnows under slip bobbers, adjusted to 8–14 feet, are effective for locating schools. Once you catch a few, stay put and work the area thoroughly; these fish often hold tight to a specific depth band or piece of structure. Ultralight spinning gear and 4–6 lb test maximize bites in the often-clear water.
Fall is one of the most consistent times to fish near Clarksburg. Cooling water pushes shad shallow, triggering aggressive feeds from bass, walleye, and hybrid striped bass where available. Work medium-diving crankbaits, lipless cranks, and swimbaits down long tapering points, creek mouths, and wind-blown banks. This is also a strong time for river smallmouth—focus on chunk rock, necked-down current, and the heads and tails of pools with compact jigs and 3–4 inch soft plastics.
Winter fishing is slower but still productive for patient anglers. Concentrate on deeper holes in the West Fork River and the main-lake basins of nearby reservoirs. Vertical presentations dominate: jigging spoons, blade baits, and small hair jigs hopped slowly along the bottom will take walleye, saugeye, and occasional bass. Downsizing your line, slowing your retrieve, and keying on the warmest part of the day can turn tough conditions into steady action.
Throughout the Clarksburg area, success comes from matching techniques to water type. In moving water, prioritize current breaks, transitions from rock to gravel, and logjams. In lakes, think in terms of points, channels, and baitfish movements. Keep a core selection of soft plastics, crankbaits, jigs, and live bait rigs, and adjust based on season, clarity, and water level to stay on fish all year.

Beaches and Bays are ideal places for land-based fishing. If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
