Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Green Bay
Green Bay, Wisconsin offers a mix of big-water structure and fertile nearshore habitat that consistently produces walleye, smallmouth bass, muskies, and panfish. Understanding how fish move between the lower bay near the Fox River, mid-bay flats, and the rocky shorelines up toward Door County is key to staying on biting fish in every season.
Spring action kicks off as ice leaves the lower bay and the Fox River warms first. Prespawn walleye push into the river and along shorelines; casting jigs tipped with minnows or plastics, or slowly trolling stickbaits in 8–15 feet is a proven pattern. Smallmouth bass stage on rock transitions and emerging weed edges—use suspending jerkbaits, tube jigs, or Ned rigs in slightly warmer pockets, especially in protected bays and along riprap. Northern pike cruise back channels and marshy shorelines; flashy spoons and spinnerbaits work well around flooded cover.
By summer, fish spread across the main bay. Walleye slide onto deeper mud flats, reefs, and open-water basins. Trolling crawler harnesses or crankbaits behind inline planer boards is the dominant tactic—vary lead lengths and colors until you dial in the active depth band, often 18–30 feet. On calm days, long-lining crankbaits or snap-jigging heavy jigging raps over pods of fish on your electronics can outproduce trolling. Smallmouth bass set up on classic Green Bay structure: rock piles, shoals, and points with scattered boulders. Fish tubes, football jigs, or drop-shots along the upwind side of structure, keeping contact with bottom and adjusting weight as wind and current change.
Fall is prime time for trophy hunters on Green Bay. As water temperatures drop, big walleyes and smallmouth bass push shallower and feed heavily. Casting larger crankbaits, swimbaits, or blade baits along wind-blown breaks and rocky shorelines can produce some of the heaviest fish of the year. Muskies become a realistic target in the lower bay and around prominent structure up the bay; big rubber baits, oversized bucktails, and trolling large crankbaits over expansive breaks and weed edges are standard approaches. Focus on areas adjacent to bait schools visible on sonar and lean on wind direction to find the most active feeding lanes.
Winter ice fishing on Green Bay centers on walleye, whitefish, and perch. Early ice often starts near the shallow west shore and protected bays before expanding; mobility is critical. For walleye, use spoons, rattle baits, or set-lines with live minnows along breaks and subtle rock transitions. Whitefish stack on deep flats and humps—small spoons, tungsten jigs, and bead rigs pounded into bottom are effective, with bites often coming as the lure lifts. Perch tend to hold in slightly shallower zones with scattered weeds or rubble; downsize to small spoons and finesse plastics when the bite gets pressured.
Throughout the year, success on Green Bay hinges on reading wind, water clarity, and forage. Wind-driven areas often outproduce calm water, especially for walleyes and smallmouth. Use quality electronics to locate bait and key structure, and be prepared to adjust depth and lure size frequently—schools move fast in this big system. With a flexible approach and a focus on seasonal movements, Green Bay consistently rewards anglers with numbers of fish and genuine trophy potential.
