Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Gadsden
Gadsden, Alabama fishing revolves around the Coosa River system, especially Neely Henry Lake and the stretches above and below it. This mix of river current, creek arms, and shallow backwaters gives anglers year-round options for largemouth and spotted bass, slab crappie, hard-fighting stripers, and dependable catfish action. Understanding seasonal movements and how fish relate to current is the key to consistent success here.
Spring is prime time for bass and crappie in Gadsden. As water temps climb into the 60s, look for largemouth and spotted bass to push shallow in pockets, flooded grass, and around boat docks. Spinnerbaits, ChatterBaits, and squarebill crankbaits cover water quickly along the shoreline, while weightless soft plastics and Texas-rigged worms clean up finicky fish around isolated cover. Crappie stack on brush piles, bridge pilings, and creek-channel edges; tight-lining minnows or slowly pushing jigs on spider rigs is deadly in the main-river pockets and larger creeks.
By summer, current from power generation becomes the dominant factor on the Coosa around Gadsden. Spotted and Alabama bass set up on points, humps, bridge corners, and ledges that break the flow. Deep-diving crankbaits, football jigs, and Carolina rigs fished right on the current seams will outproduce random casting. Early and late in the day, work topwaters like walking baits or buzzbaits along riprap banks and grass lines. Night fishing is popular in hot weather; slow-roll a big spinnerbait or drag a dark plastic worm around lighted docks and rocky points.
Striped bass and hybrids are a major draw in this section of the Coosa. In warm months, concentrate below dams, at the mouths of larger creeks, and along main-river current breaks where baitfish stack up. Live shad, bucktail jigs, and heavy swimbaits get down into the strike zone. Let your offering sweep naturally with the flow, maintaining bottom contact or just above it. When birds are working, cast spoons and small swimbaits into surface eruptions for fast-paced striper action.
Fall brings another strong bite as shad migrate into creeks and along shallow flats. Bass and white bass often school aggressively, pushing bait to the surface. Keep a lipless crankbait, small swimbait, and topwater ready to fire into breaking fish. In the backs of coves and around inflowing creeks, crappie slide onto vertical cover; one-pole jigging with 1/16–1/8 oz jigs in natural shad or chartreuse patterns is effective. Cover water until you locate a concentration, then work that depth band methodically.
Winter fishing in Gadsden focuses on deeper structure and slow presentations. Bass and crappie hold tight to channel drops, brush piles, and bluff banks. Jigging spoons, finesse jigs, and shaky heads excel on the river ledges, while vertical presentations with small minnows or hand-tied jigs pluck cold-water crappie from tight schools. Catfish roam the deeper bends and holes year-round; cut bait or live bait on simple bottom rigs catch blue, channel, and flathead catfish, especially where hard bottom meets soft silt.
Across all seasons, pay attention to water level, current flow, and water clarity. On rising, stained water, move shallower and throw larger, louder baits. On falling or clear water, back out to the first breakline and downsize lures. Target obvious Gadsden-area structure—bridges, marinas, grass edges, and rocky points—and you’ll tap into the Coosa River’s renowned productivity.
