Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Gainesville
Fishing in Gainesville, Florida centers on a network of shallow, fertile lakes and tannic creeks that consistently produce big largemouth bass and slab crappie. Newnans Lake on the east side of town is the closest major water, with Lochloosa and Orange Lake just south and Rodman Reservoir a short drive east. These systems fish similarly but each has its own nuances that reward anglers who pay attention to seasonal patterns and water levels.
Seasonal patterns around Gainesville are driven more by water temperature and water level than calendar dates. From late winter through spring, prespawn and spawning bass move shallow onto pads, reeds, cypress knees and semi-flooded shoreline brush. Focus on protected pockets and inside grass lines with soft plastics, floating worms and weightless stickbaits. Speckled perch (black crappie) school along the edges of deeper grass and brush; small jigs under a float or minnows slow-trolled in open pockets excel during this period.
Summer heat pushes bass to deeper outside grass lines, submerged stumps and any slight depth change or ditch that channels cooler water. Early and late in the day, topwaters—frogs, walking baits and buzzbaits—shined over lily pads and pencil reeds. Once the sun gets high, flipping Texas-rigged creature baits and punching matted vegetation with compact profiles and heavier weights becomes more consistent. Crappie suspend over deeper holes, creek channels and open-water brush; spider-rigging or slow trolling small jigs is a staple tactic.
Fall brings schooling activity to open water on Newnans, Orange and Lochloosa. Watch for shad flicking and birds working bait; crankbaits, lipless cranks and swimbaits in shad patterns are productive. Panfish and catfish remain active along edges of grass beds and around any inflowing creeks. Winter cold fronts can slow the bite, but stable stretches often trigger excellent crappie and bream action in deeper holes and along drop-offs.
Key habitats include expansive lily pad fields, Kissimmee grass, hydrilla, scattered cypress trees and old stump fields. On Newnans, windblown shorelines and the mouths of small creeks frequently concentrate fish. Lochloosa and Orange are known for vast, shallow grass flats; focus on irregularities—points, pockets, isolated clumps and hard-bottom spots. On Rodman Reservoir, submerged timber, the river channel and drawdown-created edges are prime bass structure.
Proven techniques and tackle for Gainesville’s lakes include:
- Weightless flukes and stickbaits in watermelon or junebug worked through pad edges and scattered grass.
- Texas-rigged worms (6–8 inch) and creature baits pitched to visible cover with 15–20 lb fluoro or 40–65 lb braid.
- Hollow-body frogs and buzzbaits fished over matted vegetation at first and last light.
- Small tube jigs and marabou jigs for crappie, slow-trolled or suspended under a fixed or slip float.
- Red worms, crickets or small pieces of shrimp on light tackle for bluegill and shellcracker along grass edges and pads.
- Cut bait or chicken liver on bottom rigs for catfish in deeper holes and along channel edges.
Water clarity can change quickly with wind and rain; in stained water, upsize profiles and favor darker, high-contrast colors. In clearer conditions, go more natural and back off with longer casts. A shallow-draft boat, kayak or jon boat helps unlock remote pads and backwaters, but Gainesville also offers productive bank and pier access around Newnans and local ponds, making it a versatile destination for both traveling and local anglers.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
