Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Yuba City
Fishing around Yuba City, CA revolves around the Feather River, the nearby Sacramento River, and a network of sloughs, canals, and small reservoirs. These waters give anglers a mix of migratory runs for striped bass, salmon, shad, and sturgeon, plus resident populations of catfish, bass, and panfish that bite all year. Access ranges from urban bank spots near bridges to agricultural levees and boat-only stretches with less pressure.
Seasonal patterns drive most of the action. Spring is prime for striped bass and American shad on the Feather and Sacramento rivers; look for schools pushing upriver on rising flows and slightly off-colored water. Early and late in the day, stripers run the edges of current seams and flooded shallows, while shad stack below riffles and at the heads of deep pools. Summer brings consistent night fishing for channel and white catfish along deep outside bends, wing dams, and confluences. Fall is dominated by Chinook salmon and occasional steelhead moving through the main river channels, while resident bass and crappie feed heavily in side channels and backwaters. Winter sees slower but steady action for sturgeon and big catfish in the deepest river holes, especially on softer, stable weather windows.
Key habitat types around Yuba City include long deep runs, rock revetment banks, riprap near bridges, low-head dams, and flooded agricultural edges when flows rise. Current seams, eddies behind snags, and transitions from gravel to mud or clay are particularly important for stripers, catfish, and sturgeon. Backwaters and slough mouths hold largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill, especially where there’s wood cover, tules, or overhanging trees. Small reservoirs and irrigation canals in the surrounding farmland often carry overlooked populations of bass, panfish, and carp that respond well to simple bank-fishing tactics.
Effective techniques and baits are highly species-specific. For striped bass, cast swimbaits, flukes on jig heads, lipless crankbaits, and bucktail jigs along current breaks; in off-color water, use brighter or larger profiles. Bait anglers do well drifting or soaking sardines, anchovies, bloodworms, or pile worms on sliding sinker rigs near the bottom. Shad are reliably caught on small shad darts and bright, 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads tipped with curly tails, fished on light spinning gear and a slow, pulsing retrieve through mid-water.
Catfish in the Yuba City area respond to cut bait (mackerel, sardine, shad), chicken liver, and nightcrawlers fished on simple Carolina or three-way rigs. Focus on the first drop off the bank at dusk, then move deeper as the night progresses. For sturgeon, target the deepest holes with a strong, but fishable, current using heavy sinkers and baits like lamprey, cured roe, or ghost shrimp presented on stout leader material.
Warmwater tactics in sloughs and ponds center on finesse and stealth. Largemouth bass fall for weightless soft plastics, wacky-rigged worms, and small jigs pitched to wood and weed edges. Crappie and bluegill cluster around submerged wood, docks, and irrigation structures; tiny jigs or micro plastics under a fixed or sliding float work well, especially when slowly twitched in place. Scaling down line, weights, and presentations can make a major difference in these pressured, often clear waters.
Success around Yuba City often comes from timing flows and light conditions. Rising or slightly stained water usually boosts the bite on stripers and catfish, while stable, clearer conditions favor bass and panfish. Dawn, dusk, and overcast days are consistently better for shallow activity; mid-day often requires shifting to deeper edges, slower retrieves, and subtler presentations.
