Current Fishing Weather
Wind Speed and Direction
Wind Direction:
Wind Speed:
Wind Direction and Speed are one of the most important aspects for choosing a fishing spot. An offshore wind can help land-based anglers with longer casting distances, while an onshore wind will make kayak fishing safer. Often fish will also move to certain feeding areas depending on the wind direction. Check out the long term wind forecast at the charts below.
Fishing Barometer
Atmospheric Pressure:
Change since midnight:
Trend for next 6 hours:
Atmospheric or Barometric Pressure affects fish activity. The best fishing can be had on a rising barometer and also the time just before it is falling. A steady barometer in the higher ranges can also mean good fishing. A falling or low barometer reading without much change is usually not a very good time for fishing.
UV Effect on Fishing
As a rule of thumb, the higher the UV index, the deeper fish will move. Shallow water fishing is best done at times with a low UV index. When the UV is high, stick to early mornings, late evenings and shaded areas. The effect is less noticable in deeper water, but often a higher UV index can produce good results in the deep.

Fishing Overview Yuma
Fishing in Yuma revolves around the lower Colorado River corridor, including Imperial, Laguna, and Martinez areas, plus irrigation canals and desert backwaters. Warm water, consistent flow, and heavy aquatic vegetation create prime habitat for bass, catfish, and panfish that feed aggressively much of the year.
Seasonally, spring and fall are peak times. From February through April, warming shallows in coves, backwaters, and flooded tules draw largemouth bass and panfish tight to the bank. Sight-fishing is common in protected pockets with hard bottom and emergent reeds. In fall, cooling nights push fish back to shoreline grass lines and shallow points, making reaction baits and topwater especially productive. Summer fishing focuses on low-light windows—early, late, and at night—when bass and catfish roam edges of current seams, riprap, and submerged wood. Winter action slows but fish stack in deeper holes, channel bends, and marinas where slow presentations shine.
Yuma’s habitat types are diverse for a desert fishery. Main-river stretches feature current breaks, wing dams, and rock piles that attract smallmouth bass, striped bass, and channel catfish. Off the main flow, oxbows, backwaters, and flooded brush lines favor largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie. Canals and drains with steady flow and clear water often hold surprisingly good panfish and catfish, especially where bridges, siphons, and drop structures create shade and turbulence.
Productive techniques for bass include soft plastics, moving baits, and topwater. In grass-choked backwaters, Texas-rigged worms, creature baits, and flipping jigs pitched to tules, laydowns, and mats produce consistent bites. On more open banks and points, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and vibrating jigs excel when there’s wind or current. Surface lures—walking baits, frogs, and poppers—are deadly at first and last light around matted vegetation and current breaks.
For catfish, target deep holes, outside bends, and the base of drop-offs in the main river, as well as canal junctions and slower eddies. Channel and blue catfish respond well to cut bait, shrimp, and prepared dough baits fished on simple sliding sinker rigs. Flathead catfish favor live bait presented tight to heavy cover, such as undercut banks, submerged timber, and rock piles after dark.
Yuma’s panfish and crappie scene is excellent wherever there’s vegetation and moderate depth. Look for schools around brush piles, docks, and submerged trees along the edges of backwaters. Small jigs, mini-tubes, and live worms or minnows under a float work well. In canals, focus on shaded stretches, culverts, and corners that break the current.
Key tactical tips include downsizing line in ultra-clear canals, using heavier braid to punch vegetation in backwaters, and adjusting presentations to daily water releases that change current speed. Polarized glasses are essential for spotting grass lines, submerged wood, and cruising fish in the shallow, sunlit waters that define the Yuma fishing experience.
