Sun and Moon Times

The sun will be at it's highest point at . Today we have 9:49 hours of daylight. For shallow water fishing the twilight periods are often the most productive fishing times, especially on days when a major or minor time will coincide with twilight. In low light conditions predators have better cover for their ambush and often hunt in shallow water.

We can compare the current moon distance to it's minimum and maximum distance from earth and express that as proximity. A high proximity means the moon is closer to earth. At 50% it would be at it's mean distance. A high proximity causes big tides, currents and has a direct effect on increased bite times. A proximity greater than 90% indicates a super moon.

7 Day Fishing Weather

The weather plays an important role in fishing. Wind strenght and direction often determine where you can fish and where fish might be holding. Although high pressure is usually good for fishing, steep pressure changes often trigger feeding frenzies and are great times for fishing. Of course temperature has also a strong effect on fishing and comfort on the water. So make sure to cross check the weather forecast with the solunar fishing times to determine the best times to go fishing. Fishing Overview Canberra

Canberra fishing revolves around a network of man-made lakes, impoundments and the Murrumbidgee River corridor, giving anglers options for native cod and perch, stocked trout and abundant redfin. Key waters include Lake Burley Griffin in the city’s heart, suburban lakes like Ginninderra and Tuggeranong, Googong Dam to the southeast and the nearby Murrumbidgee River with its deep holes and rock bars.

Seasonally, Murray cod and golden perch are prime targets from late spring through autumn when water temperatures rise. Cod respond to big surface lures at dawn and dusk in early summer, especially around drowned timber, rocky points and steep banks on Burley Griffin, Googong and along the Murrumbidgee. In the heat of summer, working large spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and soft plastics slow and tight to structure in 3–6 m of water is productive. Golden perch fire during spring and again in late summer, often schooling on drop-offs and around bridge pylons where lipless crankbaits, vibes and lightly weighted plastics excel.

Winter in Canberra is slower for natives but ideal for trout in the region’s cooler streams and in certain stocked impoundments. Focus on sunny afternoons when water temperatures bump up slightly. Small hardbodies, soft plastics on 1–2 g jigheads and classic flies like Woolly Buggers and nymphs fished through runs and pools will pick up rainbow and brown trout, as well as feisty redfin. On the lakes, winter is a good time to fish deep with metal vibes and blades along old river beds for schooled perch.

Habitat and positioning are crucial. In Canberra’s lakes, look for rocky banks, submerged trees, weed edges and inflow areas. In Burley Griffin and Ginninderra, working the edges of weed beds with small crankbaits and 2–3 inch plastics will produce numbers of redfin and the odd native. In Googong and the Murrumbidgee, target rock walls, undercut banks, eddies below rapids and any visible timber. Cod often sit tight to the thickest cover; run lures so they almost touch the structure, accepting the occasional snag as the price of success.

Techniques vary by target. For cod, use 20–40 lb braid with 40–60 lb leader, slow retrieves and frequent pauses. Surface paddlers and wakebaits are deadly in low light; during brighter periods switch to deep-diving hardbodies or heavy spinnerbaits. Golden perch respond well to slow-rolled 3–4 inch paddletail plastics, small spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits hopped off the bottom. Light spin tackle with 6–10 lb braid and 8–12 lb leader is ideal for redfin and trout; focus on bite-sized lures and keep moving until you locate a school or active fish.

Shore-based fishing is highly effective across Canberra. Work wind-blown shores where food is pushed in, and pay particular attention to points, bridge pylons and any sudden depth change. A simple, mobile approach—one rod, a small selection of proven lures and plenty of walking—consistently outperforms staying put. Dawn, dusk and overcast days are the premium windows, but slow-rolling lures in deeper water through the middle of the day will still turn fish, especially around submerged structure and drop-offs.

The Best Fishing Spots around Canberra

Lake Burley Griffin

Canberra’s centerpiece offers accessible fishing from promenades, rock walls, and kayaks, with redfin perch, golden perch (yellowbelly), Murray cod, and carp common around structure, bridge pylons, and weed beds; early morning and dusk around Commonwealth Bridge and the Kingston Foreshore are popular for casting lures and trolling quietly.

Murrumbidgee River

The main river skirting Canberra is a go-to for Murray cod, golden perch, and carp, with spinnerbaits and hardbodies worked along deep pools and undercut banks; popular access stretches include Casuarina Sands, Pine Island, and Uriarra Crossing, and kayakers often target snags and eddies at first light.

Googong Reservoir

Just southeast of Canberra near Queanbeyan, this large impoundment is famed for big redfin, solid golden perch, and occasional Murray cod, with shore casting and electric-powered/kayak trolling effective along rocky points, timbered bays, and the dam wall reaches on calm mornings.

Lake Ginninderra

A suburban lake with easy paths and foreshore access targeting redfin perch, golden perch, carp, and the odd Murray cod; anglers work weed edges, pontoons, and inflow areas near Ginninderra Drive bridges and parklands with small soft plastics and vibes.

Queanbeyan River

Running through Queanbeyan into NSW, this river offers accessible pools and runs for trout in cooler months upstream and redfin, golden perch, carp, and occasional Murray cod in town stretches; spinning small hardbodies and plastics around bridges and riffles is productive.

Lake Tuggeranong

A convenient southern Canberra lake with broad shore access for redfin perch, golden perch, carp, and occasional Murray cod; evenings see bait and lure anglers working the promenade, creek inflows, and pedestrian bridge areas, while kayaks cover deeper basins on still days.

Molonglo River

Flowing into Lake Burley Griffin, the Molonglo holds redfin, Murray cod, carp, and seasonal trout in cooler flows; popular sessions target snags and bends near Coppins Crossing and the lower reaches with spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and small diving lures.

Cotter River

A scenic mountain-fed stream west of Canberra known for clear-water fishing for rainbow and brown trout in cooler months and small natives in the lower reaches; anglers prospect pools and runs around Cotter Reserve and near Cotter Dam with light spin gear and small hardbodies.

Uriarra Crossing

A well-known access point on the Murrumbidgee where anglers target Murray cod, golden perch, carp, and occasional trout in the runs and pools above and below the crossing; evenings are popular for casting spinnerbaits to visible structure and seam lines.

Scrivener Dam

The structure that forms Lake Burley Griffin creates ambush habitat where anglers work eddies and current lines for golden perch, redfin, Murray cod, and carp; shore-based lure and bait fishing around the dam precinct is a longstanding urban staple, with nearby Yarralumla and Weston Park also productive.

If the beach is shallow and the water is clear then twilight times are usually the best times, especially when they coincide with a major or minor fishing time. Often the points on either side of a beach are the best spots. Or if the beach is large then look for irregularities in the breaking waves, indicating sandbanks and holes.
